Eco-Friendly Upgrades

Green FeaturesEach year through the Really BIG Raffle, North Idaho College strives to educate our students and our supporters on the benefits of using environmentally friendly materials and building practices in home construction. The result is a healthier home for the new owner and lower quantities of pollutants going into our environment. You can truly feel good about all the green upgrades in this home!

Healthy, Long Wearing Flooring Choices

Marmoleum

Marmoleum flooring is used instead of toxin emitting vinyl floors in the bathrooms and laundry room. This naturally derived material has a 25 year lifespan and has the lowest environmental footprint of any flooring material. Marmoleum is bio-based, highly durable, non-toxic, anti-microbial and easy to maintain. It comes in over 100 colors and patterns, the colors shown in the home include Donkey Island and Shitake.

Mannington Restorations Collection laminate covers the kitchen, hallways and dining room. Our selection this year is the Weathered Ridge line in Earth color which is 100% made in the USA and has a 25 year warranty. Mannington is a leader in USA clean manufacturing processes which produce flooring in a manner that is less negatively impacting the environment. Their laminate boards are comprised of 74% recycled content and they incorporate low-VOC adhesives, ink and finishes for healthier indoor air quality in your home.

Felt carpet pad is used throughout the home in place of urethane foam.  The chemical composition of most foam carpet cushions will greatly negatively impact a home's indoor air quality by emitting toxic VOCs. Manufacturing processes for creating foam carpet cushion also negatively impacts the environment. Felt carpet cushion is virtually free of odor and VOCs.

Efficient Lighting

Velux Skylights

LED recessed can lights with an expected lifespan of 50,000 hours are used in the home. Use them for four hours a day you won't need to change a bulb for 35 years!  Not only do these LED bulbs cost less in energy consumption and replacement costs, but they are also more eco-friendly than CFLs.  LED bulbs do not contain mercury and do not need special treatment at the end of their lifecycle like CFLs.

Velux Skylights donated a sun tunnel and skylight for the grand prize home. Skylights take advantage of sunlight to brighten up spaces that would normally require an electric light source. These skylights will reduce energy consumption saving the homeowner money and creating less environmental impact.

Upgraded Paint

Super PaintSometimes paying a little more up front makes a big impact in the long run. That is why we have chosen to upgrade the paint that is applied to the inside and outside of the home. On the inside we use No-VOC Sherwin Williams paint which has no harsh chemical off-gassing. This virtually odorless paint meets the most stringent environmental requirements and offers healthier indoor air quality for the future homeowner. On the outside we use Sherwin Williams Super Paint which offers superior performance and is backed by a 25 year warranty. This paint will save the homeowner a lot of money by not having to recoat for 25 years and saves the environment from manufacturing and disposing all of that unneeded paint.

Low VOC, Low Toxicity Building Materials

We strive to use less toxic materials during the construction process. These choices make for healthier work environments, better indoor air quality and lessens the environmental impact of the building process. Examples include low-VOC adhesives and caulk, low formaldehyde insulation and formaldehyde free interior doors.

USA Made/Eco-Friendly Manufacturers

Part of our process includes seeking out U.S. made and locally made products where possible. We also take into consideration the manufacturer's commitment to clean production of these products. U.S. made products are made with clean manufacturing standards which reduce air and water pollution and reduce unnecessary transportation energy.

Built to Northwest Energy Star Standards

ES TourOur homes are built to Northwest Energy Star standards which are over and above those of Kootenai County building codes. The result is an energy efficient home that saves its owner on utility bills and by reducing energy consumption creates less impact on the environment.
