Xplor NIC is an outreach program initiated in 2008 by North Idaho College.
The three-part college recruitment program is aimed at exposing sixth-, eighth-, and tenth-grade students to the college’s programs and services while they’re still forming their opinions on whether or not college is a good choice for them.
Each age group experiences a real college class, such as automotive technology, law enforcement, nursing, pig dissections in biology, math principles through origami, or dog training demonstrations in psychology. These classes are taught by NIC faculty.
Groups also participate in a team-building exercise coordinated by NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits in which a large group of students must work together as a whole to accomplish a goal.
Finally, students attend a workshop specially designed for their age group regarding costs for college, careers, or how to research colleges. (For more information, see Compare NIC.)
NIC and its partner the Coeur d’Alene School District, hope to provide this program every spring.
