Intro to Computers and Applications

Course Description: BUSA 100 is the study of computer system and applications. It includes the history, terminology, industry trends, and social impact of computers and introduces students to computer hardware, software, and programming. This course provides a basic understanding of computers and computer literacy. It is required for the Small Business Management, Business Administration, Business Education, and A.A.S. degree Business and Office Technology programs. It meets the computer science requirement for the A.A. degree. This course cannot be taken for credit after completion of CS 100. Prerequisite: Prior completion of other courses is not required.

Course Outcomes (goals)

  1. Recognize, identify, and explain the social, ethical, legal, and moral impacts of computer technology on our society, and appreciate the underlying principles of computer literacy.

  2. Identify the component devices of a computer system and describe how they are able to process data into useful information.

  3. Define, classify, and explain the two broad categories of computer software and use the software to create, analyze, and process information.

  4. Define and explain the concepts of data communications and networking.  Use computer technology to access, retrieve, and send information within a networked environment.

Course Grading Policy:

The mid-term grades and final course grades are based upon the total cumulative points earned from attendance, exams, quizzes, and computer lab projects. At the end of the semester, the lowest grade for a weekly quiz will be eliminated from the student's list of scores. Neither the mid-term exam, the final exam, or lab projects are throw-away grades!
