General
Education Abilities:
North Idaho College believes that
student success is defined by seven factors: (1) an enjoyment of learning; (2) the ability to be able to think clearly; (3) the ability to reason critically; (4) an understanding of one's own heritage, as well as perspectives offered by other cultures and eras; (5) the basic skills essential for active citizenship and lifelong learning; (6) an awareness and concern for our natural environment;
and (7) the ability to recognize our personal responsibilities to and for each other as human
beings.
Attendance
Policy:
"Students are responsible for attending the courses in which they are enrolled. Regular class attendance is expected. In the case of recipients of veteran's educational benefits, excessive absences may mean a reduction in subsistence payments. Instructors may initiate the withdrawal of any student in their class if they deem that the student's absences have been excessive and if it is before the last day one may withdraw from a course." NIC
Catalog
ABSENCES: An absence is recorded for
ANY reason the student fails to attend class. An accumulation of
three weeks absences prior to April 1 (the last day to formally withdraw) is considered to be excessive and may result in being withdrawn from the course. Excessive absences occurring after
April 1 will result in a loss of grade points. Absences for
college-sponsored activities are not covered within the College's Policy Manual. However, I recognize that students may have little choice as to their expected participation in these activities. Advanced written notification from the activity's instructor or supervisor
is to be submitted to the instructor, and the student's class assignments are to be completed
prior to leaving the campus for a scheduled activity.
HABITUAL TARDY
and
EARLY DEPARTURES from the classroom are considered to be a rude and disruptive behavior and are not an acceptable practice. Three (3) tardy or early departures will count as one un-excused absence. A continuance of this behavior may result in being withdrawn from the course.
MAKEUPS: ALL
missed assignments are the
STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY, regardless of the reason for the absence.
Lecture notes should be obtained from other students in the class, as lectures will not be repeated. Missing an examination or quiz will result in a
grade of zero for that exam or quiz. Habitual missing of exams or
quizzes will result in an automatic zero for any subsequent missed exam or quiz. It's the
instructor's prerogative to grant makeups and the student can be expected to supply verifiable documentation as to the reasons of the absence. Makeups, if approved, must be
completed within one (1) week.
Classroom
Conduct
It is expected that students will conduct themselves with civility, good manners, and maintain academic honesty.
Conduct that is disruptive, rude, or harmful to the other students and instructor will not tolerated.
Academic dishonesty will result in a loss of grade points and may cause the student to be withdrawn from the course.
Withdrawal
from Course
Students, who do not attend
a class for which they have registered, and do not officially withdraw from the class, will receive a grade of "F", unless the instructor for the class initiates a withdrawal. Withdrawals will not be processed if the student has a financial hold on their records such as parking fines, library fines, delinquent loan payments, etc. To withdraw from a course the student must use the following procedures:
-
Obtain a
Course Withdrawal form from the Registrar's office.
-
The form must be
signed by your academic advisor and the course's instructor.
-
The student is responsible for
delivering the completed form to the Registrar's office on or before
April 1, which is the last day a student may withdraw from a semester-length course.
-
For extenuating or unusual circumstances beyond
April 1, a
Student Appeal Request petition may be submitted to the
Admissions and Academic Standards Committee. The petition is
administered through the Registrar's office.
Learning
& Physically Disabled Students
Students with documented impairments, (i.e. physical or mobility, learning, visual, hearing, cognitive, medical, or emotional), which interfere with the learning process, academic success or academic potential or students wishing to seek evaluation for learning difficulties are encouraged to contact the instructor and Disability Support Services, (769-7836), as soon as possible. Learning and testing accommodations are available for eligible students. Information will be kept confidential at the student's request.
