Group Project
Thea 101
Your group will research and prepare a play for
rehearsal. The actors will
focus on one scene of the play and the scenic and costume designers may do
so as well. Your group will
have the entire class period to present the information about the play to
the class. Each group member
will turn in a two page report as well.
Designers need only write one page, since they will turn in their
designs.
|
Director:
|
Research the script and author.
Choose a spine for the play and be able to discuss why.
Decide on a rehearsal method(s) you might use to work with
the actors. Choose a commanding image and share this with the designers
to help them create scenery and costumes for the production.
Write down your process of decision making and working with
the actors and designers. Share
this information during the class presentation.
|
|
Dramaturg:
|
Research the play, its past productions, the
author, and the time period of the play and author. Research any references or issues in the play that the
actors, director, or designers may not be aware of.
Write down your process and some highlights of what you
discovered about the material in your paper.
|
|
Scene Design:
|
Research any relevant architecture and scenic
practices from the time period and setting of the play.
Photocopy significant pictures to share with the class.
After discussing the director’s commanding image, use that
and your research as well as your ideas about the play to design
scenery for the production. If
one design can work for the entire play or requires only minor
variations for scene changes, design for the complete play.
If the play has many scenes that you feel require complete
scene changes, use the scene the actors or using and design the
scenery for that. Create
a drawing of the scene design.
You can make a model as well, if you choose. For the class presentation, share the highlights of your
research, show any photocopied pictures, and your drawing.
Write a one page paper discussing your process and the
highlights of your research.

|
Costume Design:
|
Research any relevant fashions from the time period
and setting of the play. Photocopy
significant pictures to share with the class.
After discussing the director’s commanding image, use that
and your research as well as your ideas about the play to design
costumes for the production. If
one design can work for the entire play or requires only minor
variations for scene changes, design for the complete play.
If the play has many scenes that you feel require complete
costume changes, use the scene the actors or using and design the
costumes for that. Create
a drawing of the characters wearing the costumes design.
For the class presentation, share the highlights of your
research, show any photocopied pictures, and your drawing.
Write a one page paper discussing your process and the
highlights of your research.

Actors:
|
Score the scene for your character, answering Uta
Hagen’s six questions:
Who am I?
Where am I?
What time is it?
What do I want?
What’s in my way?
How do I overcome what’s in my way to get what I want?
Don’t use one sentence answers.
Go into detail and be very descriptive and specific.
Also decide on a superobjective for the character (What do
they want at the end of the play?).
Remember, the character doesn’t know how the scene or play
ends so focus on what would be a victory for them.
You will share this and your reasons for your choices in the
class presentation.
