Don really isn't a soccerball; although, he plays soccer and notes often that it is his favorite thing in the world. Don has worked for the Network & Systems Division of Computer Services since the 1st day of 2001, which as I edit this, is 4.5 years ago.

Here is a short list of things Don has been doing lately for NetSys:

1. Setup and installed wireless bridges and point-to-point wireless connectivity between buildings.

2. Engineered and designed the physical networking infrastructure from the ground up: encompassing the entire physical wiring plant and the Cisco networking hardware for all MDFs and IDFs across the entire campus, including all satellite campuses.

3. Configured, installed, and maintained all Wireless Access Points; security, authentication, and location for best connectivity and range results; as well as Site Surveys.

4. Did most in-house low-voltage cabling: pulled copper (50-300 pair), twisted-pair (CAT5, CAT5e/E, and CAT6), and fiber cabling (single and multi-mode; multiple pairs) between buildings (underground conduit and steam tunnels) and between data closets in all buildings on campus. Terminated, tested, and punched down all cabling on 110 blocks, 66 blocks, patch panels, jacks, built crossover and straight patch cords, and labeled.

5. Built all data-closets from the ground-up; this includes (but, is definitely not limited to) the design, engineering, and installation of all equipment: racks, patch panels, 110 blocks, lightning protection blocks, fiber boxes, Cisco network hardware, UPS setup, etc..

6. The complete and comprehensive analysis and documentation of the campus physical wiring plant end-to-end. Solidified and published (intranet Web) a suite of documentation that provided technicians, vendors, and peers a comprehensive mapping of the entire wiring plant, networking components, connectivity diagrams and topology maps for both the physical networking infrastructure and the wireless networking infrastructure.

7. PBX Administration: Definity G3si (v9.5), Definity G3s (v4.0), and a couple of turn-key phone systems (i.e., Iwatsu). All administrative duties and functions: including all adds, moves, and changes between the PBX and the VoiceMail (Audix) Systems for approximately 1,000 users. Also did the physical adds, moves, and changes in the data closets: punching down the crossconnects between copper feeds between buildings to move phone connectivity to desired locations throughout campus.

8. Monitored and maintained 120+ Cisco devices across campus: firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless access points via GUI and CLI; telnet, console, and web interfaces. Installed and upgraded IOS versions on all devices and kept a comprehensive database of all serial numbers, warranty information, device locations, IOS updates, configuration backups, and inventory for all devices as well.

9. Maintained infrastructure inventory: including backup networking devices, cabling, phones, cabling equipment, and hundreds of other pieces of networking equipment.

0. Contacted and managed contractors for large-scale cabling projects; oversaw each project and all details of said project until fruition.

1. Comprehensive physical cable plant count for mandatory GASB-34 compliance on reporting infrastructure and depreciation of capital assets.

2. Health & Sciences Building Project Lead for the data, phone, voip, wireless, etc.. installation(s) for the new building.

3. Project Lead for the VoIP Project; which is the installation and upgrade of all existing analog/digital phone across all of the LAN and WAN campuses at NIC.

4. Don is working with Bill Porath on the VLAN/DHCP/Trunking re-build for all LAN & WAN campuses as well.

5. Silver Valley Center

6. Ramsey Building

7. VoIP

8. He’s a busy guy.

During any free time that he has, Don loves to stay active and loves the outdoors; he can frequently be found traveling, mt. biking, camping, and playing all kinds of sports. Of course, he is heart-and-soul a geek, so he isn't too far away from a computer.
