FAQs:

What is VNC and RealVNC?

VNC is a third party product that allows remote management of computers through a management console or through a web interface.  RealVNC is a more secure product as it allows the end user (who is being accessed) to choose if they want their machine accessed.

Is RealVNC Secure?

Yes.  RealVNC offers two layers of security.  First, when someone tries to attach to your computer, a dialogue box will pop up asking you if you will allow your computer to be accessed.  You are able to control when someone has access to your computer.  Second, the Computer Services Employee attaching must have a password to your instance of VNC.

What is involved with installing RealVNC?

If you received your computer after December 2003, RealVNC is probably already installed.  Otherwise, click on the link above and you will launch an installation program.  VNC will be installed shortly and you will receive notification when it has finished.

What kinds of things will someone with remote access be able to do for me?

As long as you are connected to the network, they will be able to do practically anything they would be able to do if they were standing there.  You will be able to watch them as they navigate your desktop for troubleshooting, installation or just general help.  They will not, however, be able to login to the computer after a logout or restart.

Can they restart my machine for me?

Yes, however, for them to reconnect the session of remote access, you will again have to give them permission.

Who is authorized to access my machine?

Currently only full and part time employees of Computer Services can access your machine through VNC.  Please call x3280 for more details.

Why a remote management tool?

In order to best serve the community, we want to be able to respond to your needs as quickly as possible.  A remote management tool of this nature will frequently allow us to assist you the instant you call.  It will save footwork for us and let you get back to your task as quickly as possible.

What other aspects of Remote Management will Computer Services be implementing?

In addition to remote access, we will be implementing remote asset management (in order to find the oldest generation computers on the network) and remote software installation (to make sure we are all running the same product).  More details on these features soon!
