  GroupWise 6.5
Rollout Plan

Improved Features:

SPAM Filtering
GroupWise 6.5 has the ability to filter unwanted e-mail. Studies have shown that up to 35% of all e-mail is SPAM. GroupWise 6.5 gives powerful and effective tools to the user. The ability to block or filter e-mail easily will create a safer and more productive collaborative environment.

User Friendly
The GroupWise 6.5 client works the way you do, so common tasks are accomplished quickly and easily. Buttons and icons are placed in logical, easy-to-use areas and make it easy to manage your information.

Web Interface
GroupWise 6.5 has a new web (
http://webmail.nic.edu) interface that is faster, easier, and has more features. It's ideal for the mobile worker who needs to stay connected.

Training:

There will be classroom training available for those who would like an instructor-lead class. Classroom training sessions will be July 29, July 31, and during the week of August 25.  QUICK Source learning guides will be distributed at training sessions, given to offices as they upgrade, and available at the Help Desk (Siebert 107). This professionally-produced training material is excellent as a step-by-step guide to new features and old tricks. The Help Desk will be fully trained in the new software and ready to answer any questions you may have.

Software Installation:

New PC’s and PC’s that come into the Help Desk for service will have GroupWise 6.5 installed as their e-mail client. If a person is having problems with their existing client, then the Help Desk will upgrade that user to the new client. If this is an office situation, then we will attempt to upgrade the entire office at this time.

If you would like to request the upgrade for yourself or your office, please contact the Help Desk at x3280. The old client (Version 5.5) is compatible with the new client, so there is no mandatory client upgrade. If you do not wish to have any disruption, we can schedule the upgrade at a time that is most convenient for you.

Because installing the new software requires uninstalling the old software, we will be required to do the upgrade in your office. There is no remote option at this time.

Exceptions:

As with most things, there are a few exceptions and notations that should be addressed in this plan.

Windows 95/98
GroupWise 6.5 will not run on a Windows 95/98 PC. If you have a PC running Windows 95/98, there are two options--upgrade the Operating System to Windows 2000/XP, or continue to use version 5.5.

Macintosh
There is no new client for the Macintosh environment, but Novell is in the beta testing phase for a cross-platform client that will work with the Macintosh. We have signed up as part of the Beta Test group and will continue to participate in helping to deliver an e-mail client that will work with all computing environments.

Until Novell completes this cross-platform testing phase, Macintosh users will need to continue to use GroupWise 5.2 or WebMail.

Conclusion:

GroupWise 6.5 will be a positive addition to the computing environment at NIC. Its focus on protection and productivity will help NIC realize gains in this primary communications tool.
