Who Can Apply

International students over 17 years of age whose native language is not English and who have successfully completed the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma are eligible. Students must have studied English in their native country for at least four years, have a complete understanding of the English alphabet and phonetic system, and have at least a low-intermediate fluency level in English. Students do not need a TOEFL exam score to apply.

IELP offers five 8-week sessions throughout the year. Below is a calendar for 2002:

How to Apply

Students should submit ALL of the following documents by the appropriate application deadline:

  • Application for Admission

  • $25 Application Fee

  • Financial Certificate

  • Health Certificate

  • Official Transcript from High School or College

  • Proof of Health Insurance*

*All international students must send proof of health insurance with worldwide coverage from native country or must purchase health insurance from NIC/ASNIC ($440 per year) before an I-20 can be sent.

Prospective students must submit a financial statement showing sufficient funds for one year of study. The minimum is $12,700 per academic year.

Students admitted to the IELP will receive a letter of acceptance along with an I-20 to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their native country in order to receive an F-1 student visa.

Financial Aid

NIC does not offer financial aid to international students; however, international students are able to work up to 20 hours on campus when positions are available. Also, once students join academic classes they can apply for a scholarship.

Repatriation and Medical Evacuation Insurance

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) requires all students to purchase Repatriation and Medical Evacuation insurance. This insurance must be paid at the time of registration. The fee may increase or decrease annually, but it is usually less than $50 per year.
