How to find reserve items

In addition to electronic reserve items, instructors can put other materials on reserve for their students. These may be books, videos, music CDs, or photocopies of articles, class notes and student work. When an instructor puts something on reserve, the item is held at the circulation desk in the library for the exclusive use of the students in that class. Students may check out these items for 2 or 3 hours to use in the library, or they may borrow them for 1-7 days. The check out time is set by the instructor when the item is placed on reserve. Students must obtain the instructor’s permission if they wish to borrow an item for longer than the designated time. Grace periods do not apply to reserve items, and overdue fines are higher: $1 per hour for hourly check out and $1 per day for daily check out periods.

All materials on reserve, including electronic reserve items, can be found in the library catalog. Students can use the catalog to learn what an instructor has on reserve and if it is currently available. To insure that all students have equal access, reserve items are available on a first come, first serve basis; they can not be held for an individual student.

To find reserve items, from the library home page ( http://www.nic.edu/library/ ), click on the catalog:

On the catalog search page, click on the course reserves tab:

Use the drop down menu to find the name of the instructor: (Tip: The list includes all instructors at NIC, LCSC, and U of I who have reserve items. NIC instructors are in all caps and appear alphabetically before those from the other schools.)

Click on the search button to get a list of items on reserve for that instructor:

The list has information about the course, instructor, where you can find it, and whether it’s checked out:

Clicking on the title will open the record for that item, which will give you more information, like when a checked out item is due:

Clicking on the title of an electronic reserve item will also open the item record. This has a link to the Ares log in page for electronic reserves:
