    Room is still available for area youths to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 25-28 at Franklin Park, located just east of Rowan and Division in northern Spokane. NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp. Both heats will be offered from 9 a.m.

  • NIC hires new recruitment specialist

    |photo1|North Idaho College recently hired Sara Schmelzer as the new recruitment specialist in the NIC Admissions Office. Schmelzer completed graduate level courses in business administration and holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Eastern Washington University.

  • Ironman finisher to speak at NIC Booster Club lunch

    Brenda Smith, a triathlete who successfully finished the Coeur d’Alene Ironman Triathlon in 2004, will be the featured speaker at the North Idaho College Booster Club luncheon at noon Tuesday, June 28 at Tony’s Supper Club, located on Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive in Bennett Bay.  Smith, the Human Resources director at NIC, plans to participate in this year’s Ironman and will be talking about the Ironman experience, what it takes to be an Ironman and how anyone can achieve a goal of this magnitude.

    Less than 1,000 tickets remain for the chance to win a $200,000 custom home during the North Idaho College Foundation’s 12th annual Really BIG Raffle in Coeur d’Alene.   The grand prize $200,000 custom home, built by students in the NIC Carpentry program, is at 1374 Coquille Court in Post Falls.

  • NIC implements Video Relay Service station on campus

    Last fall, North Idaho College’s Center for Educational Access called upon student leaders to address the need for proper technology for the deaf community, and the Associated Students of NIC answered. The culmination of an ASNIC project came to life recently as the light of a table lamp on the lower level of the Edminster Student Union Building began to flash on and off, signaling a call through the new Video Relay Service. “The Video Relay Service is like a web-cam, phone and interpreter all in one,” said Edward Emerson, an ASNIC senator from Ponderay, Idaho that spearheaded the project this spring.

  • NIC hires new residence hall coordinator

    |photo1|North Idaho College recently hired Yong Choo as the new coordinator of the NIC Residence Hall.   Choo completed a master’s degree in counseling in May and holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast communication from Washington State University.   While working toward his undergraduate degree, Choo served for two years as a resident assistant in the co-ed residence hall of 255 students at Washington State University.   Choo was a graduate assistant resident director for one year, supervising a residence hall of 400 students as well as 10 resident assistants and three hall presidents at the University of Idaho.

  • County Commissioner to speak at NIC Booster Club lunch

    Kootenai County Commissioner Katie Brodie will be the featured speaker at the North Idaho College Booster Club luncheon at noon Tuesday, May 31 at the Coeur d’Alene Brewery, located at 209 Lakeside Avenue in downtown Coeur d’Alene.  The NIC Booster Club holds its regular weekly meetings Tuesdays at noon in the Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Shore Lounge.

  • NIC student steps up selling awareness bracelets in support of campaign

    Although financial contributions to the NIC Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign are the focus of the community fundraising campaign set to raise a minimum of $2 million to equip the NIC Health and Sciences Building and provide student scholarships, non-monetary support of the college and campaign is also important. “We were looking for a way to spread awareness of the campaign as well as give people a tangible way to show their support of the college,” said NIC Alumni Relations Coordinator Sara Fladeland. NIC student Edward Emerson believes that many people care about NIC because the college has changed so many lives, like it did his. Emerson is a 35-year-old student with four children that commuted every day to NIC from Ponderay.

    North Idaho College student body leaders were recently elected for the 2005-2006 school year.   The Associated Students of NIC (ASNIC) represent the college’s 4,519 students with an eight-member senate, which is presided over by the ASNIC president and vice president.

  • Award winners announced at NIC Booster Club auction/banquet

    The North Idaho College Booster Club announced the winners of this year’s Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards at its annual Spring Auction and Athletic Awards Banquet May 7 at the Eagles Lodge. The award recipients are nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff. The Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to wrestler Justin Pearch of Oregon City, Ore., this year’s wrestling team captain and team MVP.

  • Approximately 150 GED students to receive certificates

    Many of the more than 700 students eligible for a General Education Development (GED) certificate through the North Idaho College Adult Basic Education program have overcome much adversity on their way to this milestone, which is what makes the GED Graduation Ceremony unique.   “There’s a different atmosphere at this graduation,” said ABE/GED Director Rex Fairfield.

  • NIC Graphic Design Exhibit showcases student graphic design work

    North Idaho College graphic design students, who have published their work through various venues throughout the region, will have the opportunity to showcase their work during the Graphic Design Exhibit May 9 through 19 in the Boswell Hall Corner Gallery. “This exhibit is meant to showcase the practical and relevant applications of the graphic design students from the classroom to the real world,” said NIC Graphic Design Instructor Philippe Valle.

  • NIC sells awareness bracelets in support of fundraising campaign

The family division, a division of the campaign leadership devoted to NIC students, employees and alumni, noticed people young and old showing their support for various projects with awareness bracelets. |photo1|The bracelets, made popular by organizations such as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, are silicone wristbands designed to show support for various causes. The college saw the bracelets as a perfect opportunity to raise funds for the campaign as well as spread awareness about NIC. The college awareness bracelets are cardinal red and customized with “NIC Supporter.” Bracelets are $2 each and are available through the NIC Mica Peak Exchange bookstore, the NIC Foundation Office in Sherman Administration Building Room 104 or from 11:30 a.m.

  • NIC machining students challenge drafting students in engine design competition

    Sometimes, when building a machine, machinists will recognize a critical flaw in the design that could lead to the dysfunction of part or all of the mechanism. Conversely, designers often see ways to make a machine run more efficiently while still in the blueprint phase of construction. Both the designers and machinists in this scenario have the same goal: make the machine run to its optimum potential.

  • Director selected to coordinate NIC’s Educational Opportunity Center

    |photo1|John Sarchio has been selected to direct North Idaho College’s Educational Opportunity Center of Northern Idaho. Sarchio has worked as an advisor with the Educational Opportunity Center since October 2002, when the program was initiated. The NIC Educational Opportunity Center of Northern Idaho was established in 2002 with funds from a $950,000 TRIO grant awarded to NIC from the U.S.

  • NIC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter to present pop culture symposium

    The North Idaho College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, will present the last seminar in its symposium focused on popular culture. The symposium is part of the chapter’s exploration of this year’s Phi Theta Kappa honors study topic “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.” In Phi Theta Kappa, the honors study topic is intended to bring current issues forward while encouraging members to examine how these issues affect their lives.

  • Science student presents before Idaho Academy of Sciences

    North Idaho College student Shane Moore from Weippe, Idaho, recently presented the results of a chemistry research project at the Idaho Academy of Science annual conference in Nampa, Idaho. The Idaho Academy of Science is an organization of faculty and students that promote and support math and science education.

  • NIC intramural sports officials t-shirt takes first place at conference

    North Idaho College’s Recreational Sports Department won first place in a recent professional development competition at the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Conference for its design of officials’ t-shirts. The t-shirts, which are given to students who successfully complete a season as an intramural sports official, took first place in the t-shirt and apparel category against other recreational sports departments from both two-year and four-year colleges and universities.

  • Coeur d’Alene family contributes $20,000 to NIC campaign

    The Adams family believes in education and knows well the value that North Idaho College brings to the community.   Which is why the family decided to contribute $20,000 to the NIC Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign for technology for the new NIC Health and Sciences Building as well as student scholarships.    “We all have a fondness for the college because it’s touched each of us in some way,” said Wally Adams, a 1961 graduate of NIC.

  • All-girl band Raining Jane to perform at NIC

    The all-female band Raining Jane will perform at North Idaho College Thursday, April 21.   After a previous performance at the college, NIC’s Student Events Committee decided to respond to student demand and bring the band back for another performance.   The rock-folk band is made up of guitarist and cellist Mai Bloomfield, guitarist Chaska Potter, drummer Mona Tavakoli and bassist/guitarist Becky Gebhardt.

  • NIC student receives esteemed scholarship award

    North Idaho College student Kim Lee of Hayden was recently awarded a prestigious scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, toward the completion of a baccalaureate degree.   Lee was chosen by the national Phi Theta Kappa office as a 2005 New Century Scholar, receiving a $2,000 scholarship funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa.

  • NIC to sponsor first ever North Idaho adventure race

    North Idaho College’s Student Activities Department will sponsor the inaugural NIChallenge, an adventure race Saturday, May 7 at Farragut State Park.   NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits program is helping to coordinate the event, which is the first ever to be held in North Idaho.   “I think the closest other regular adventure race is in Leavenworth, Wash.,” said Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator Paul Chivvis.

  • NIC Theater Department presents dinner theater production

    The North Idaho College Theater Department will present its spring production of Private Eyes in a special dinner theater-style format April 21-23 at NIC.    Private Eyes is a Steven Dietz comedy of suspicion where nothing is quite what it seems, according to NIC Theater Director Joe Jacoby who will be directing the play.

  • NJCAA national wrestling tournament to stay in Minnesota

    The North Idaho College wrestling team won’t have the opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd for the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament, but NIC Athletics Director Al Williams said he hasn’t given up hope for 2010.   Following the submission of a bid from NIC and the Spokane Regional Sports Commission to host the tournament for a three-year run at the new Spokane Convention Center that is currently under construction, Williams received word today at the NJCAA national meeting in Charlotte, N.C., that the 2007-2009 national wrestling tournaments will remain at their current site in Rochester, Minn.

  • Week’s activities to raise awareness of disabilities

    College staff and students as well as community members will learn about disabilities and the various organizations that support individuals with disabilities during Disability Awareness Days April 11-13.   Organizers are expanding on several successful years to include a variety of different agencies and events held at both the NIC campus and Kootenai Medical Center.   “It is important that non-disabled individuals take the time to understand the needs and experiences of individuals with disabilities, so that we can support them in both education and in our community,” said Center for Educational Access Coordinator Sharon Daniels-Bullock.

  • NIC offers community education classes in the Silver Valley

    North Idaho College will offer several community education courses in the Silver Valley this spring that are open to the general public.   Courses will be offered at the new Silver Valley Center, located at 323 Main Street in Kellogg.   Nurse Assistant Training (CNA) will be offered in 30 sessions from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

  • NIC announces spring Phi Theta Kappa inductees

  • NIC Student Art Show to showcase student art in the Corner Gallery

    North Idaho College students will have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork during the juried Student Art Show April 11 through May 5 in the Boswell Hall Corner Gallery.   “This is a great opportunity for our students to exhibit the pieces they’ve created throughout the year and to experience the last cycle of the artistic process,” said NIC Boswell Hall Corner Gallery Coordinator and art instructor Allie Vogt.   The Student Art Show will feature a variety of original works created by students in their art classes.

    Declining enrollment in two North Idaho College programs has brought about substantial change to those programs, including the non-renewal of teaching contracts for four NIC faculty members. NIC will eliminate its Electronics Technology program next fall.

  • NIC Food Services Supervisor places in regional competition

      |photo1|North Idaho College Food Services Supervisor Steve Taylor placed in a food preparation and presentation competition at a recent National Association of College and University Food Services Conference. NIC was the only two-year college at the regional convention, which was attended by dozens of college staff from the eight-state continental region that includes three Canadian provinces. A total of nine chefs participated in the Culinary Challenge competition in which a saddle of lamb was prepared from a raw state in 75 minutes.

  • NIC to remain open during Spring Break March 28 through April 1

    No classes are scheduled for North Idaho College students during Spring Break March 28 through April 1. Although administrative offices will remain open during Spring Break, hours in several departments will change. NIC’s Molstead Library will be closed Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27.

  • Eighth-grader wins second annual regional spelling bee

    Eighth-grader Matt Harlow of Hayden out spelled 55 other fourth- through eighth-graders from the five northern counties of Idaho to become the champion speller in the second annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee March 19 at North Idaho College.   Harlow, a student from Canfield Middle School in the Coeur d’Alene School District, received a Merriam Webster’s Third New International Unabridged Dictionary, a Samuel Louis Sugarman $100 savings bond, a $20 Amazon.com gift certificate, a plaque courtesy of Hagadone Newspapers and, best of all, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

  • NIC interim men's basketball coach to stay at NIC

    |photo1|Jared Phay, who stepped in last September to serve as head men’s basketball coach at North Idaho College this past season, will remain as Cardinal head coach, NIC Athletics Director Al Williams announced Monday.   "Coach Phay rose to the challenge we were presented with last fall and showed his dedication to the program," Williams said.

  • Memorial scholarship established in honor of Scott Hague

    Through contributions from family members, the North Idaho College Foundation has established the Scott Hague Memorial Scholarship in honor of NIC alumnus and community supporter Scott Hague, 40, who died as a result of cancer March 1 in Coeur d’Alene. The scholarship will benefit deserving NIC students through the NIC Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign. “Scott would be very pleased to know that others would be helped in his honor,” said Denny Hague, Scott’s father and an NIC Trustee. The NIC Foundation hopes that community contributions will help grow the scholarship to the endowment level, a minimum of $5,000.

    The piece of land on which North Idaho College now sits once served as the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s winter home and gathering place. Now years later, Native Americans representing numerous tribes from across North America will again gather at this site called Yap-Keehn-Um, a Coeur d’Alene term meaning “the gathering place,” to celebrate culture, companionship and tradition at NIC’s Gathering Place Powwow March 18 and 19. This year’s powwow will host numerous drum circles that will play throughout the event as well as food and arts and crafts vendors outside Edminster Student Union Building. The host drum will be Dine-Nation of Tuba City, Ariz., and Leon Old Elk of the Crow Tribe and Nicky SiJohn of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe are the head dancers.

Stimson showed its commitment to education and the community recently through a $25,000 gift to the NIC Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign to establish the Stimson Lumber Company Scholarship endowment. “We are excited to be joining North Idaho College in support of higher education,” said Jeff Webber, vice president of manufacturing for Stimson Lumber Company, which has assets and manufacturing facilities in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington and manages approximately 500,000 acres of company-owned timberland.

The course instructor Kathleen Lamanna, who is a motivational speaker, teacher and certified personal coach, will share tips on dating, meeting places, eliminating anxiety and distinguishing between good and bad catches. Perspectives will be offered from both genders with tips applicable to both sides of the dating world. A professional counselor will also address dealing with issues of the past, setting and maintaining boundaries and the pros and cons of Internet dating.     Former North Idaho College softball player Jill Oglesbee was recently named as an All-American Scholar-Athlete for the 2003-2004 season by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Oglesbee received the award in the junior college division for earning a 3.5 GPA or higher. Oglesbee, a graduate of University High School in Spokane, played for NIC from 2002 to 2004. She maintained a 3.67 GPA during the 2003-2004 school year earning recognition on the National Junior College Athletic Association 2003-2004 Academic All-American Team in July. Oglesbee was also a two-time selection to the Region 18 Scenic West Athletic Conference All-Region First Team and was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete during the 2002-2003 season as well.

  • NIC sets new enrollment record; up 1.5 percent

    With increases in full-time academic students as well as its dual enrollment program for high school juniors and seniors, North Idaho College has established a new all-time enrollment record of 4,519 students for the 2004 fall semester. The increase of 67 students reflects a 1.5 percent increase over fall of 2003, according to NIC President Michael Burke. “Our goal is managed growth and I believe that this year’s enrollment figures reflect our success in continuing to meet the needs of the community,” Burke said. NIC’s dual enrollment program, which allows eligible high school juniors and seniors to enroll in NIC courses, experienced a 24.5 percent increase over last fall, growing from 183 to 228 students. NIC Distance Education Director Candace Wheeler attributes much of the growth to an initiative by NIC to offer dual enrollment classes on site at several high schools during the school day.

  • New NIC Booster Club president aims to increase membership

    Linda Davis believes that with the right synergy in an organization, the sum of the whole can truly be greater than the sum of its parts. That’s why as the new president of the North Idaho College Booster Club, she plans to increase the “number of parts” by aiming to triple the 180-person membership. Davis hopes to encourage new members to sign on during the club’s annual membership drive, which kicks off in September. “Because of the fiscal wisdom of the people in the NIC Athletics Department, it doesn’t take much to make a significant difference,” Davis said.

  • NIC community campaign leadership directs fund/friend-raising efforts

    The North Idaho College Foundation knew that the people it chose to direct the Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams community campaign would be the first and most integral step to ensuring the success of the campaign. Not only because their hard work would reap results, but because their enthusiasm for the college and the campaign is what would motivate the scores of other community volunteers dedicated to executing a successful fundraising effort, according to NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “Our campaign chairs are true community leaders, committed in the deepest sense to the success of this campaign and its profound impact on North Idaho College,” Anderson said.

  • NIC partners with chamber to provide business courses

    The North Idaho College Workforce Training Center in cooperation with the Idaho Small Business Development Center and the Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce will offer a series of 12 business courses this fall tailored to small business owners and business professionals. The courses will cover marketing and advertising, managing employment issues, writing business plans, goal setting and personal professional development.

  • NIC students earn communication award

    Ten North Idaho College students recently earned honors for excellence in communication. The Achievement and Excellence in Communication Award was initiated last year to honor students who excelled in communication and provide them a certificate that could be used as a reference to show their competence as a communicator, according to NIC Communications Instructor Mona Klinger. To qualify, students must have completed at least nine credits earning a B or better in communications courses at NIC. Spring 2004 recipients include: Michael Hiebert of Rathdrum, Linda Lee of Coeur d’Alene, Larisa Stipek of Athol, Jenny Marie Estep of Coeur d’Alene, Linsey Baker of Coeur d’Alene, Kelly B.

  • Softball player named to NJCAA Academic All-American Team

    North Idaho College softball player Jill Oglesbee was recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association 2003-2004 Academic All-American Team, which honors athletes for maintaining a 3.6 GPA or higher. Oglesbee, a third baseman from Spokane and a graduate of University High School, maintained a 3.67 GPA during the 2003-2004 school year. She was also a two-time selection to the Region 18 Scenic West Athletic Conference All-Region First Team and was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete during the 2002-2003 season.

  • NIC Workforce Training Center enrollment up 11 percent

    North Idaho College’s Workforce Training Center reported an 11 percent increase in enrollment for fiscal year 2004. “The Workforce Training Center is a regional model for how to do training right,” said NIC President Michael Burke.

  • NIC Foundation announces fundraising campaign at $1 million

    North Idaho College and the NIC Foundation announced that $1,015,000 has already been raised through the Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign, which officially kicked off Tuesday. Several major gifts were announced at the kickoff by Campaign Tri-Chairs President and CEO of J-U-B Engineers, Inc.

  • Former NIC student designs Idaho Lottery scratch ticket

    North Idaho College graduate Nicolet Laursen recently received a $1,000 scholarship from the Idaho Lottery for her design of a scratch ticket. Her winning design “Super Splatters” will be printed by the Idaho Lottery and the scratch ticket will be available to the public in October.

  • Area youths encouraged to participate in NIC summer softball camp

    Space is still available in the North Idaho College softball skills camp for children ages 8 to 18 to be held July 26 through 29. NIC’s softball coaching staff will lead participants as they hone their skills in the fundamentals of softball, including throwing, fielding, hitting, bunting, sliding and catching. The first session for ages 8 to12 will be from 9:30 a.m.

  • Space still available in NIC fitness camp

    Space is still available in the first ever fitness camp at North Idaho College for children in first through sixth grades. NIC Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Jared Phay, who holds a master’s degree in physical education, will join NIC physical education majors and student-athletes in leading the NIC Fitness Camp July 12-16.
