    The North Idaho College softball team was named as an Academic All-American Team by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).   The team’s average GPA for the season was 3.30.

  • NIC hires new vice president for student services

    North Idaho College has selected Eric Murray, the current dean of student affairs at the University of Montana-Western, as its new vice president for student services.   “Eric has an impressive breadth of experience in student services, both at the University of Montana-Western and at UCLA,” said NIC President Michael Burke. “He will be a strong advocate for students and he will enrich the leadership team here. I look forward to working with him.”   |photo1|Since 1999, Murray has served as the dean of student affairs at the University of Montana-Western in Dillon, Mont., overseeing the student affairs division, which includes more than 12 departments such as admissions, facilities, career services, service learning, residence life, counseling and student activities.   From 2003-2004, Murray served as the executive assistant to the chancellor, a one-year appointment created to assist with departmental functions and academic issues delegated by the chancellor during a temporary absence of the dean of the school of education, business and technology.

  • Softball players named to NJCAA Academic All-American Team

    North Idaho College softball players Stephanie James of Coeur d’Alene and Vanessa Wood of Hamilton, Mont., were recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association 2005-2006 Academic All-American Team, which honors sophomore athletes for maintaining a 3.6 GPA or higher.   James, catcher, was the valedictorian of her Coeur d’Alene High School class and maintained a 3.87 cumulative GPA at NIC for 2005-2006.

  • NIC hires new director of radiography technology program

    After nearly a year of searching, North Idaho College recently hired a director for its new radiography technology program.   Debra Ortiz was most recently the program director of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology in Torrance, Calif.

  • NIC coaching staff and players offer summer softball camp

    Room is still available for area youths to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 24-27 at Franklin Park, located just east of Rowan and Division in northern Spokane.   NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp.   Both heats will be offered from 9 a.m.

  • Award winners announced at NIC Booster Club auction/banquet

    The North Idaho College Booster Club announced the winners of this year’s athletics awards at its annual Spring Auction and Athletic Awards Banquet May 6 at the Eagles Lodge.   The award recipients are nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff.   The Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award was presented to two recipients, women’s basketball player Sara Dennehy from Lake Washington High School in Redmond, Wash., and volleyball player Collese Dornan from Fife High School in Fife, Wash.   Dennehy earned National Junior College Athletic Association all-America second team honors this season and is a two-time first team all-Scenic West Athletic Conference selection.

    Several North Idaho College softball players were named to all-region teams in Region 18 of the Scenic West Athletic Conference.   Pitchers Kelcey Cavan, of Skyview High School in Billings, Mont., and Melodee Mildenberger of Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Mont., as well as Christine Shollenberger of University High School in Spokane, Wash., and Spring Montgomery of East Valley High School in Spokane, Wash., were selected to the all-region first team.

  • Approximately 150 GED students to receive certificates

    Many of the nearly 500 students eligible for a General Education Development (GED) certificate through the North Idaho College Adult Basic Education program have overcome much adversity on their way to this milestone, which is what makes the GED Graduation Ceremony unique.   “There’s a different atmosphere at this graduation,” said ABE/GED Director Rex Fairfield.

  • NIC Children’s Center staff establishes memorial fund in honor of child

    The staff of the North Idaho College Children’s Center recently established a memorial fund for the son of an NIC employee that died over the weekend.   The two-year-old son of Heather and Steve (Richard) Taylor, the production supervisor for NIC Food Services, died in a drowning accident while visiting relatives in Oregon.

  • NIC Graphic Design student wins film award

    North Idaho College Graphic Design student Nick Burdett of Sandpoint recently won an award in the 2006 Idaho Panhandle Film Festival.   Burdett’s animations “Conserving Water” and “Seahawks Win” were two of three entries in the animation category of the festival and Burdett received a first place award for his environmental animation “Conserving Water.”   The festival was sponsored by Dreamgulch Productions, the Idaho Film Commission and the State Department of Tourism.

  • Colombian women’s rights activist to speak on women and war in Colombia

    Yaneth Perez, president of the Dawn of Women for Arauca women’s organization, will present “Women and War in Colombia” at noon Tuesday, April 25 in Molstead Library’s Todd Hall on North Idaho College’s main campus.   Perez is a single mother of three living in Arauca, one of the most war-torn regions of the South American nation of Colombia.   Occidental Petroleum has an oilfield and pipeline in Arauca that are protected by the Colombian and U.S.

  • NIC soccer program signs several recruits for 2006 season

    Several athletes recently accepted scholarships to play for the North Idaho College women’s soccer team during the 2006 season.    McKenzie Favero, of Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah, helped lead her team to a second-place finish in the 2005 state tournament.

  • Five students top the NIC Speech Contest

    Five students received awards for winning the annual North Idaho College Spring 2006 Speech Contest April 11, earning awards for the first speech they wrote and presented in their Communications 101 classes at the beginning of the semester.   Of more than 440 total communications students, 20 were selected by their peers to represent their classes in the contest, which is judged by NIC students, staff and faculty each semester.

  • Landscape Technology program to renovate NIC soccer field

    Through collaboration with the athletics department, students in the North Idaho College Landscape Technology program began a renovation project on the NIC soccer field this week.   “The renovation was initiated due to the hazards on the soccer field,” said NIC Soccer Head Coach Dan Hogan.

  • NIC to sponsor second annual North Idaho adventure race

    North Idaho College’s Student Activities Department will sponsor the second annual NIChallenge, an adventure race Saturday, May 6 at Beauty Bay Special Recreation Management Area on Lake Coeur d’Alene.   NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits program is helping to coordinate the event, which is the only race of its kind held in North Idaho.   “Last year our race was a great success,” said Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator Paul Chivvis.

    The North Idaho College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, will present a seminar focused on Jesus as a cultural icon April 20.   The seminar is part of the chapter’s exploration of this year’s Phi Theta Kappa honors study topic “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.” The topic is utilized as the focus of various Phi Theta Kappa honors programs.   The seminar, “Jesus in America: Personal Savior or Cultural Hero?” will be at 4 p.m.

    College staff and students as well as community members will learn about disabilities and the various organizations that support individuals with disabilities during Disability Awareness Days April 10-13 held at both the NIC campus and Kootenai Medical Center.   “It is important that non-disabled individuals take the time to understand the needs and experiences of individuals with disabilities, so that we can support them in both education and in our community,” said NIC Center for Educational Access Coordinator Sharon Daniels-Bullock.

    |photo1|Former North Idaho College soccer player Brian Farber is enjoying a successful first season in the Major Indoor Soccer League as a rookie midfielder for the California Cougars.   Farber, a 23-year-old from Sandpoint, played at NIC from 2000 to 2001 and went on to play at Oregon State University before joining the Cougars, an indoor soccer team in Stockton, Calif.

  • NIC to remain open during Spring Break March 27-31

    No classes are scheduled for North Idaho College students during spring break March 27-31.   Although administrative offices will remain open during spring break, hours in several departments will change.   NIC’s Molstead Library will be closed Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26.   Hours will be modified the week of spring break.

  • Sixth grade home schooler wins third annual regional spelling bee

    Sixth-grader Rachel Pinkerton of Coeur d’Alene outspelled 45 other fourth- through eighth-graders from the five northern counties of Idaho to become the champion speller in the third annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee March 18 at North Idaho College.   Pinkerton, a 10-year-old home school student from Coeur d’Alene, received a Merriam Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, a Samuel Louis Sugarman $100 savings bond, a plaque courtesy of Hagadone Newspapers and, best of all, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

  • NIC students qualify for national BPA competition

    Twelve students in the Business and Office Technology programs at North Idaho College placed at the recent state Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition in Boise March 3, qualifying them for the national competition.   “These students compete against other Idaho two- and four-year colleges,” said Kathie O’Brien, NIC Business and Office Technology instructor and NIC BPA chapter adviser.

  • NIC’s BPA chapter supports Special Olympics through cell phone campaign

    The North Idaho College chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA) participated in a statewide BPA community service project collecting used cell phones as a benefit for Special Olympics.   Through NIC and Idaho State University’s “Turn Old into Gold” used cell phone campaign, the Idaho BPA State Officer team was able to present Idaho Special Olympics a check for $1,633.

  • Film presented in honor of International Women’s Day

    The formation of women’s circles and the movement that connects them worldwide will be the focus of a documentary shown March 7 at North Idaho College in honor of International Women’s Day.   “Peace by Peace: Women on the Frontlines” is a documentary by the organization PEACE X PEACE, which focuses on peace as a component of harmonious and just societies, along with financial equity, restorative justice, rights of education and speech and inclusive governments.

  • Post Falls business honored by Idaho SBDC as ‘Star Entrepreneurs’

    Post Falls business owners Gary and Jennifer Trefz were recently honored by the Idaho Small Business Development Center as “Star Entrepreneurs” during the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration this month in Boise.   The owners of Living Springs in Post Falls were among six businesses from across the state honored for taking advantage of multiple services of the Idaho SBDC and showing an entrepreneurial spirit in growing a successful business.   In 2002, the Trefz’ learned of a struggling 14-bed assisted-living facility in Post Falls and turned to the Idaho SBDC based out of the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center for assistance.

  • Instructors sought for NIC center located in Bonners Ferry

    The North Idaho College center located in Bonners Ferry is scheduled to open this summer and qualified individuals are needed as instructors.   Instructors are sought to teach courses in a variety of subjects, including communications, art, psychology, sociology, creative writing, English, economics, history, math, accounting, human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical transcription, medical software applications, legal issues in health care and medical coding.   “We are seeking instructors from the Bonners Ferry area to teach several face-to-face classes this fall,” said NIC Director of Distance Education Candace Wheeler.

    North Idaho College’s Popcorn Forum Convocation Series Symposium is returning to its popular Chautauqua format for this year’s series “A Journey Through Time: Dialogue with Great Minds From History” March 20-24.   Dozens of distinguished presenters will portray thinkers and innovators throughout time during the 36th annual Popcorn Forum series, both speaking and dressed as the character they are portraying.   “Chautauqua performances have a way of drawing the audience in so each person feels that they are really in the presence of these historical figures,” said NIC’s Popcorn Forum Coordinator Tony Stewart.

    The effect of music and dance during different time periods in black history will be the focus of two films presented at North Idaho College this month in honor of Black History Month.   “Rize” is a documentary directed by David LaChapelle about the street dance phenomenon “krumping.” The dance evolved as an escape from the violence faced every day in the tough streets of south central Los Angeles, where the dance originated.   “Rize” will be shown at 7 p.m.

    The North Idaho College Foundation announced Tuesday the recipients of $50,995 in grant money awarded this year through the NIC Foundation Grant Program.   Funded by gifts received throughout the year, the NIC Foundation has awarded $618,180 to fund 130 grants over the past 12 years.   Of the 32 grants submitted this year from NIC faculty, staff and student organizations, 15 grants were awarded.

    Inland Northwest Health Services showed its support for North Idaho College’s role in helping to provide quality health care in the community by contributing to the NIC Providing Opportunities—Fulfilling Dreams Community Campaign.   The campaign was initiated in the summer of 2004 to raise support for technology and equipment in the new Meyer Health and Sciences Building and establish new student scholarships.   Inland Northwest Health Services, based in Spokane, contributed $243,000 to the campaign to fund and support the Meditech system for the NIC Nursing Department.

    Judy and Steve Meyer feel that their community has contributed greatly to their success and believe it’s their duty to give back, giving generously of both time and resources to support community needs.   Their philanthropic nature and contributions to North Idaho College recently earned them the prestigious Council for Resource Development (CRD) Benefactor Award.   The CRD is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges made up of professionals and leaders in community college resource development.   The benefactor award was presented before more than 500 community college administrators and development officers at the gala awards banquet the CRD’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.

    North Idaho College recently wrapped up its 13th annual United Way Chili Cook-Off as a fundraiser for United Way of Kootenai County.   |photo1|A total of 11 teams participated in the chili cook-off dressing, decorating and creating chili concoctions to the theme “Chili of the World.”   More than 200 people attended the event, which was judged by Jeff Conroy of United Way, Ann Beutler of Century 21, Gene Tillman of the Coeur d’Alene Inn and Craig Grimmer of Costco.   NIC employees are still donating pledges to the fundraising drive, so final numbers have not been tabulated on the amount raised during this year’s fundraiser.

    People say to Rebecca Nixon all the time… “I don’t know how you do it.” The Lake City High School graduate is completing her second year at North Idaho College in the pharmacy technology program while working 60 hours per week and raising her four children, 9-year-old Stephanie, 5-year-old Harmony, 3-year-old Julie, who is deaf, and 1-year-old Matthew. Nixon, however, is quick to point out that she’s not doing it all without help. Nixon received a $1,500 scholarship from the NIC Alumni Association for the 2005-2006 academic year.
