    Basketball players are encouraged to register their team for the Coeur d’Alene Shootout, a three-on-three basketball tournament Aug. 18 and 19 at North Idaho College. Coeur d’Alene Shootout is a double-elimination tournament with standard half-court games played to 20 points or 25 minutes.

    North Idaho College pitcher Kelcey Cavan of Billings, Mont., was recently selected to the United States of America/National Junior College Athletic Association team in the World University Games. Cavan is one of 15 current and former softball standouts that will travel to Bangkok, Thailand Aug.

  • NIC student newspaper The Sentinel earns prestigious national award

    North Idaho College’s renowned student newspaper The Sentinel recently earned the title of Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper from the Society of Professional Journalists. The prestigious national award was presented to the NIC student newspaper through the SPJ’s 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards, which included more than 3,300 entries in 39 categories. The Sentinel was competing against four-year colleges and universities for the award and was one of only two two-year schools to win a Mark of Excellence Award. Other finalists in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper were the University of Nevada, Reno and Auburn University in Alabama. “The students really are a fantastic team,” said NIC Journalism Instructor and Sentinel Adviser Nils Rosdahl.

  • Award winners announced following NIC Booster Club auction/banquet

    The North Idaho College Booster Club announced the winners of this year’s athletics awards following the annual Spring Auction and Athletic Awards Banquet last month. The award recipients were nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff. The Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award was presented to two recipients, softball player Kelcey Cavan of Billings, Mont., and volleyball player Cintia Alessi from Curitiba, Brazil. As a freshman, left-handed starting pitcher, Cavan led the Cardinals to the team’s first Region 18 championship in school history.

  • NIC coaching staff and players offer summer softball camp

    Room is still available for players ages 8-18 to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 16-19 at Franklin Park, located just east of Rowan and Division in northern Spokane. NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp.

  • NIC softball player named national All-American

    North Idaho College softball player Angie Boardman of Spokane, Wash., was recently selected as a National Junior College Athletic Association first team All-American. Boardman, a second baseman, was one of just over a dozen junior college Division I softball players selected for the honor nationwide. At the conclusion of the season, Boardman was named to the All-West Region first team for leading the NJCAA Division I in RBIs with 62 in the 2006-2007 season.

  • NIC Board revises presidential finalists, Bell to interview Tuesday

    The North Idaho College Board of Trustees has revised its list of final candidates for the president position and has invited current Interim President Priscilla Bell to meet with the campus and community on Tuesday, June 12. The board voted on Friday morning to add Bell to the finalist list, which also includes Leah Bornstein who was on campus for interviews and meetings in late May. Bell served as president of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., from 2000 to 2006.

  • NIC presents girls’ summer basketball camp

    North Idaho College women’s basketball coaches and players will lead a weeklong girls’ basketball camp June 11-14 to help participants improve their basketball skills. The Girls’ Summer Basketball Skills Camp will help players develop their skills in both individual skills and team concepts, including shooting, defense, ball handling, screens, passing technique, one-on-one techniques and position play. The camp will be progressive in instruction, building on the previous session’s lessons so campers develop their entire game. The camp will be from 9 a.m.

  • NIC softball players named to NFCA All-Region team

    Four North Idaho College softball players were recently named to Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region teams for the National Junior College Athletics Association Division I. “This is a big honor, because these players were selected out of all the teams in the western region,” said Head NIC Softball Coach Don Don Williams.

  • Hanson vacates vice president for instruction post at NIC; Christie to serve as interim

    In what she described as a decision to advance the best interest of North Idaho College, Vice President for Instruction Barbara Hanson, Ed.D., announced May 30 that she is stepping down from the position at the end of the current fiscal year June 30. Kathy Christie, assistant vice president for planning, assessment and research, will serve as interim vice president for instruction.

  • NIC students fare well at Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference

    Seven North Idaho College student members of Business Professionals of America (BPA) attended the Annual National Leadership Conference “Destination: Success” in New York City, May 9-13. NIC BPA chapter members joined over 6,000 other conference delegates from across the nation to participate in national business skill competitions, workshops, general sessions, and national officer candidate campaigns and elections. Fifty-one competitive events were offered in four categories: Financial Services, Administrative Support, Information Technology, and Management/Marketing/Human Resources.

Schultz holds a master’s degree in fine art from Stanford University as well as a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the San Francisco Art Institute.

  • NIC offers mountain biking physical education course

    Community members are encouraged to spend this spring break mountain biking in scenic Utah during North Idaho College’s physical education course offered during NIC’s Spring Break March 31 through April 6.   Participants will learn about riding techniques, bike maintenance and desert ecology while mountain biking across Moab, Utah, which is considered one of the world’s most popular mountain biking areas.   Participants must have an approved mountain bike and helmet and prior biking experience is mandatory.   Those interested in participating in the trip must sign up for the one-credit physical education course through NIC.

  • NIC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter to present seminar on power

    The North Idaho College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, will present a two-part seminar focused on power this month.   The seminar is part of the chapter’s exploration of this year’s Phi Theta Kappa honors study topic “Gold, Gods and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.” The topic is utilized as the focus of various Phi Theta Kappa honors programs.   The first part of the seminar will be the showing of the 1992 film “The Distinguished Gentleman” at 4 p.m.

    North Idaho College’s Patrice Wheeler, who serves as the assistive technology access specialist in NIC’s Center for Educational Access, was recently presented an award for her service to individuals with disabilities.   Wheeler received the 2006 Disability Rights Advocate Award from the City of Coeur d’Alene and the Disability Action Center as a professional who provided outstanding service and advocacy for the rights of individuals with disabilities.   Wheeler received the award in the professional category.

  • NIC auditorium staff/theater department earn national awards

    Several North Idaho College Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium staff members as well as students and former students of the NIC theater department recently received prestigious awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for the production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this fall.   NIC Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium Director Justin Van Eaton received a Meritorious Achievement Award for scenic design of the production.   NIC Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium Technical Director John Gallegos earned a Meritorious Achievement Award for theatrical lighting.   NIC Theater Department Costumer Judith McGiveney received a Meritorious Achievement Award for costume design for the fall production.   Former NIC student Monica Thomas, who played Helena in NIC’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” received an award for her acting work in the play.   Current NIC students T.C.

  • NIC student receives state nursing scholarship

    North Idaho College registered nursing student Ami Higbee of Athol, Idaho recently received a state nursing scholarship through the Idaho Nurses Association.   The $860 Florence Whipple Scholarship Award was presented through the Idaho Nurses Association.   The Florence Whipple Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 as a memorial to Whipple, who was known for her personal and professional quest for knowledge of better ways to meet the health needs of the people.

  • Coldwater Creek contributes nearly $50,000 to NIC

    Coldwater Creek contributed nearly $50,000 to the North Idaho College Ponderay Center for the purchase of technology and equipment for the newly-opened facility.   NIC’s former Sandpoint Center relocated to its new location in the Bonner Mall in Ponderay this fall, to consolidate classrooms and facilitate future growth with additional space.   One room in the NIC Ponderay Center was designed with a computer lab capable of having instructor-led classes offered from the room.

  • NIC Foundation awards more than $50,000 in grants

    The North Idaho College Foundation announced Tuesday the recipients of $50,707 in grant money awarded this year through the NIC Foundation Grant Program.   Funded by gifts received throughout the year, the NIC Foundation has awarded $668,887 to fund 149 grants over the past 13 years.   Of the 33 grants submitted this year from NIC faculty, staff and student organizations, 19 grants were awarded.

    How about buying your loved one a house for Christmas this year?   Tickets are on sale now for a chance to win a $300,000 custom home in the North Idaho College Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle.   “Think BIG this holiday season and give your loved ones a chance to win a beautiful home while helping deserving North Idaho College students at the same time,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson.   Tickets are $100 each and only 5,000 tickets will be sold before the July 11 drawing.   This year marks the 14th year of the Really BIG Raffle, which is sponsored in part again this year by Stock Building Supply of Coeur d’Alene.   The grand prize custom home is currently under construction by NIC carpentry students at 1649 Umpqua Court in the Montrose subdivision of Post Falls.   The home is a multi-level, three-bedroom, two and a half-bath with more than 3,400 square feet of living area.

  • NIC graphic design instructor produces DVD for Spokane educational project

    North Idaho College Graphic Design Instructor Philippe Valle doesn’t want to be part of the classic education double standard: where he teaches about the most advanced techniques and technologies in the field of graphic design, but fails to use them in practice.   That’s why after more than 25 years as a graphic designer, Valle continues to take on graphic design projects on the side while teaching at NIC.

  • NIC volleyball players named to All-Region teams

    Several North Idaho College volleyball players were named to All-Region teams following the Region 18A championship in which NIC (34-6) won the regional title.   Cintia Allessi of Curitiba, Brazil was selected to the All-Region first team in addition to being honored as Region 18A Player of the Year.   Lauren Stern of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Konae Purcell of Aiea, Hawaii were also named to the All-Region first team.   Amanda Misa of Waipahie, Hawaii was named to the All-Region second team and Daidre Mendenhall of Spokane, Wash., earned honorable mention.   NIC Head Volleyball Coach Bret Taylor was named Region 18A Coach of the Year.   With the regional title, the eighth-ranked Cardinals advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament Nov.

  • NIC library features theater costumes and set designs through November

    Miniature theater set designs and costumes for various Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre productions will be on display throughout the month of November in North Idaho College’s Molstead Library.   The set designs are miniature models created by Michael McGiveney that the full-size stage design is based upon.

    Several North Idaho College soccer players were selected to All-Conference/All-Region teams for Region 18 of the Scenic West Athletic Conference during the 2006 season.   NIC men’s soccer player John Prugh of Bozeman, Mont., was named to the All-Conference/All-Region team and has been selected as a Player of the Year/All-American nominee.

    The North Idaho College softball team was recently named as a Top 10 All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.   The designation was based on GPAs submitted by teams for the 2005-2006 school year.

    The North Idaho College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, will present a two-part seminar focused on gender and power this month.   The seminar is part of the chapter’s exploration of this year’s Phi Theta Kappa honors study topic “Gold, Gods and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.” The topic is utilized as the focus of various Phi Theta Kappa honors programs.   The first part of the seminar will be the showing of the Charlize Theron film “North Country” at 4 p.m.

    The North Idaho College volleyball team finished 5-1 this weekend at the Days Inn Invitational Tournament at NIC's Christianson Gym. Seven teams from four states participated in the two day event, including several players from Hawaii and overseas, giving the six-match event an international flair.        The Cardinals, who came into the tournament ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association rankings, improved their record to 22-4.   NIC opened the tournament with a 30-17, 30-15 win over Chemeketa Community College that featured NIC racking up 32 kills with Konae Purcell (10 kills) and Cintia Alessi (8 kills) accounting for the Cardinals' fierce offensive game at the net.

    Jared Bork scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season on Sunday to give the Cardinals a 2-0 win over Laramie County Community College. Bork scored his first goal of the match on a penalty kick after freshman midfielder Mark Lee was taken down in the penalty area in the 23rd minute. Lee made a great effort to beat two Laramie defenders and was around the third when he was knocked down.  NIC's second goal came in the second half when sophomore midfielder John Prugh started the play with a service into the box that forward David Powers collected and slid to Bork for an open-net finish.    NIC returns home this weekend for two nonconference matches.

  • Men rebound with 1-0 win over Whitman (NCAA Division III)

    The NIC men's soccer team put together a strong performance on Sunday to defeat Whitman College, an NCAA Division III school, with a 1-0 victory in Walla Walla. It was a total team effort with the Cardinals outshooting Whitman 13-10 and freshman goalkeeper Seth Baker earning his third shutout of the season. The lone score of the game came in the 71st minute after a scramble in front of the Whitman goal. NIC freshman forward Blake Hayashi knocked the ball loose to sophomore midfielder Pat Sullivan who drove it into the left panel for the game winner.  NIC travels to Salt Lake City this weekend for its first Scenic West Athletic Conference match on Friday at 4 p.m.

  • NIC apprenticeship programs experience record enrollment

    North Idaho College’s three apprenticeship programs offered through the Workforce Training Center in Post Falls posted record enrollment for fall 2006-2007.   NIC’s apprenticeship programs include 144 hours of related instruction and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training for apprentice electricians, plumbers and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians and sheet metal workers.   Enrollments in the electrician program grew from 197 in 2005-2006 to 239 this year.

  • Men's soccer team starts with a 5-0 win

    The North Idaho College men's soccer team opened its season at home last Saturday with a 5-0 shutout against Western Wyoming Community College at Bill Eisenwinter Field on the NIC campus.   NIC sophomore captain John Prugh got the Cardinals going in the first half with a goal and an assist and sophomore Alex Day scored the first two goals of his career in the second half to lead the NIC team to its home opener victory.

    Former Gonzaga University standout Richie Frahm, who now plays in the NBA, will be the featured speaker at the North Idaho College Booster Club luncheon at noon Tuesday, July 25 in the Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Shore Lounge.    Frahm averaged 12.5 points per game during his four-year collegiate career at Gonzaga University.

    An estimated crowd of approximately 2,500 ticket holders and community members braved a thunderstorm that settled in quickly during the North Idaho College Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle drawing Wednesday night.   Nearly $300,000 in prizes was given away at the 13th annual event, including the $250,000 custom house built by students in NIC’s carpentry program.
