    North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits is offering a mountain biking trip to McCall, Idaho July 11-13. The two-night adventure will take participants on several well-known southern Idaho trails including the Parlor of Pain Loop, a 20-mile trail with ridge-top climbs and creek-side descents.

  • NIC wrestling coach John Owen to receive Idaho Humanitarian Award

    Legendary wrestling coach John Owen, who built the North Idaho College wrestling program into a national powerhouse, has been named the 2008 recipient of the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame’s Idaho Humanitarian Award. The Idaho Award, which will be presented during the Humanitarian Hall’s 2008 Induction Ceremonies June 24 in Boise, is presented annually to a resident of the state of Idaho who has made a significant contribution to sports in Idaho. “Success can be assessed in many ways, in athletics and in life – wins and losses, longevity, respect, recognition and perhaps most of all the positive influence we have on others,” said Idaho Gov.

  • NIC Beach Hut now open

    After a long winter and a flooded spring, the North Idaho College Beach Hut operated by the Outdoor Pursuits program is now open. The red shack located on NIC’s Yap-Keehn-Um Beach is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.

  • NIC coaching staff and players offer summer softball camp

    Room is still available for players ages 8-18 to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 28-31 at Finucane Park, located on the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and Fourth Street in Hayden. NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp. Both heats will be offered from 9 a.m.

  • NIC to offer multi-sport youth summer camp

    North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits program is offering a new multi-sport summer camp for youths ages 12 to 16. The camp will lead participants on a variety of outdoor adventures, including skill-building in rock climbing, sea kayaking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, sailing and hiking. The camp will be offered from 8 a.m.

  • NIC board approves five-year strategic plan

    The North Idaho College Board of Trustees approved the 2008-2013 NIC Strategic Plan, a set of goals and objectives that will guide the course of the college over the next five years, at its May 28 meeting. A steering committee made up of 10 community members and 10 NIC staff, faculty and students has been working on the plan since November.

  • NIC to sponsor fourth annual North Idaho adventure race

    North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits will sponsor the fourth annual NIChallenge, an adventure race Saturday, May 31 in Coeur d’Alene (at a yet-to-be-announced location). “This is the only race of its kind held in North Idaho,” said Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator Paul Chivvis.

  • NIC ABE/GED students earn awards

    The North Idaho College Adult Basic Education/GED program presented honors to several students during its graduation ceremony May 6. Johnny Giltner of Post Falls was awarded the ABE/GED Spirit Award for constantly being upbeat while overcoming learning challenges to earn his GED. Giltner encouraged fellow students with his team attitude and often gave rides to other students, encouraged others to continue their studies when they were discouraged and tutored students on his own time. In addition, two students received Student of the Year honors, which include one-year scholarships to NIC. Tiana Wood of Post Falls received the ABE/GED Student of the Year Award for exemplary attendance, discipline, work ethic and participation in the NIC Adult Education Center’s mentoring program.

  • Big Sky softball standout signs with NIC

    Briggett Plenger, a softball standout from Big Sky High School in Missoula, Mont., recently signed a letter of intent to play softball at North Idaho College during the 2008-2009 season. NIC’s softball team placed second in the nation at the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament in 2006-2007.

    Joe Bear’s name was recently scribed into the North Idaho College machine technology history books when he built an engine that topped out at the second highest speed in the history of the college. Bear, from Pinehurst, recently built a Stirling engine as part of his coursework in the machine technology program.

  • NIC office technology instructor earns award through BPA

    North Idaho College Computer Applications and Office Technology Instructor and NIC Business Professionals of America (BPA) Adviser Kathie O’Brien recently earned the Outstanding Service Award at the 2008 National Leadership Conference May 7-11 in Reno, Nev. The national award recognizes individuals who have dedicated time and effort to promoting the objectives of the organization and have provided outstanding service to the association at the national level. O’Brien has served as the NIC BPA chapter adviser for seven years and is currently the president of the Idaho Business Education Association.

    Distributed April 30, 2008 The North Idaho College Board of Trustees agreed Wednesday evening to explore options that could lead to college acquisition of the education corridor on the current site of the Stimson Lumber Company DeArmond Mill adjacent to the main NIC campus. The board passed a resolution affirming its commitment, initially approved by Trustees in March 2007, to the project.

  • NIC to honor nurses during Nurses’ Day

    Bernice Wright knew from a young age that she wanted to become a nurse. “Initially, I thought the uniforms were cute,” said Wright, adding that later she grew to understand that she had a passion for helping people and that being a nurse was what she was meant to do. Wright earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and over the next 50 years, she served as a nurse working in rural community hospitals, a children’s hospital, as a public health nurse serving 13 villages in Alaska and even establishing a public health agency in Wyoming. After years of serving her profession, Wright decided to give back to the profession by teaching.

  • College to kick off Xplor NIC program

    North Idaho College will host nearly 3,000 sixth, eighth and 10th graders this month as it reaches out to middle and high schoolers during a new outreach program called Xplor NIC. The three-part college recruitment program is aimed at exposing students to the college’s programs and services at a young age and subsequently following up by meeting with them through the middle of their high school years. “We want to show students the benefits of attending college while they’re still forming their opinions,” said NIC President Priscilla Bell.

  • Outdoor Pursuits to offer backpacking light workshop, hike

    North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits will offer a workshop and weekend hike to teach participants lightweight backpacking techniques. The workshop and hike will be led by Senior Editor of Backpacking Light Magazine Mike Martin. During the classroom portion, Martin will cover lightweight clothing, shelter, sleep, packing, hydration and cooking systems that will decrease most packs from 40 or 50 pounds to approximately 10 pounds.

    Approximately 200 of the top high school juniors in North Idaho’s Region I schools were honored recently during the North Idaho College Top Scholars Program. Juniors in the top 10 percent of their classes were nominated by their principals to be honored at the event, each receiving a certificate and a gift from NIC and the Region I high schools.

  • Human rights leader to speak on women and war in Colombia

    Maria Ruth Sanabria, a mother of six and human rights leader living in war-torn Colombia will present “Women Waging Peace in Colombia” at noon Tuesday, April 22 in Molstead Library’s Todd Hall on North Idaho College’s main campus. Sanabria is the president of the Arauquita municipal human rights commission and is a member of the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights.

  • NIC to offer flexible options for computer and office technology classes

    Beginning this summer, North Idaho College will begin offering its computer applications and office technology classes through a more flexible method that eliminates the need for students to attend classes several hours per week to learn new computer applications or brush up on their skills. NIC is following a nationwide community college trend toward changing computer application courses to one-credit, student-paced modules to make them more convenient for students. “Flexible learning courses are an educational alternative for students who can master course material without traditional classroom instruction,” said NIC Computer Applications and Office Technology Instructor Sue Shibley.

  • NIC graphic design students to exhibit work at Bing Crosby Theater

    The work of North Idaho College graphic design students will be exhibited in the art gallery of the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane through May 16. The exhibit features 31 prints designed by students based on topics discussed at NIC’s 38th annual Popcorn Forum and Convocation Series Symposium in March. The pieces cover global warming, viral diseases, food contamination, terrorism and ethnic genocide, all themes the Popcorn Forum event “Earth in Crisis: A Search for Solutions.” “The graphic design students delved deep into very serious issues and create public discourse by offering visual images that will stick in the minds of viewers,”said NIC graphic design instructor Philippe Valle.

  • Eighth grade home schooler wins fifth annual regional spelling bee

    Eighth-grader Rachel Pinkerton of Coeur d’Alene outspelled 38 other fourth- through eighth-graders from the five northern counties of Idaho to become the champion speller in the fifth annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee March 29 at North Idaho College. Pinkerton, a 12-year-old home school student from Coeur d’Alene, received a Merriam Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, a $100 Samuel Louis Sugarman U.S.

    After two strong wins over Colorado Northwestern Community College, (96-59) and the 22nd-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins (76-67), the NIC Cardinals found themselves playing the seventh-ranked College of Southern Idaho for the Scenic West Athletic Conference championship and a trip to the national tournament. A strong start in the second half put the Lady Cards up early, but strong inside play for CSI made the difference as the Eagles pulled away with a 71-58 victory on their home court.

  • NIC’s 2008 Popcorn Forum to address world issues

    North Idaho College’s Popcorn Forum Convocation Series Symposium will address global issues during this year’s series “Earth in Crisis: A Search for Solutions” March 17-21. Dozens of experts will present on current topics prevalent world wide, including global warming, viral diseases, food contamination, terrorism and ethnic genocide. “This year’s keynoters are all nationally-recognized experts in their various fields of study, making this symposium one of the most outstanding in the 38-year history of the Popcorn Forum,” said NIC Popcorn Forum Coordinator and Political Science Instructor Tony Stewart. On Monday, March 17, the symposium will kick off with a brief welcome by NIC President Priscilla Bell and Associated Students of NIC President Ryan Robinson at 11 a.m.

    After a nationwide search, the search committee for the North Idaho College vice president for instruction position has selected four candidates with whom to begin the interview process. NIC employees, students and community members will have the opportunity to meet the candidates in a series of open forums held March 10, 12, 18 and 19. Each forum will begin with a half hour reception for attendees to meet the candidates, followed by a short statement from the candidate and then approximately 45 minutes of questions and answers. The open forum with Marjorie Price will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

    North Idaho College volleyball coach Bret Taylor announced today that he is resigning from his head coaching position at NIC with plans to pursue business opportunities locally. After serving as NIC’s assistant volleyball coach for one year, Chris Kosty will take over the head coaching position in the interim.

    The focus of the North Idaho College Idaho Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) is to help small businesses thrive and grow, which it has done for the Hayden-based Bullet Tools several times over the company’s nine-year history through both startup and struggle. The ISBDC helped the fledgling company create its first business plan and obtain initial financing in 1998 when the company was launched from Dalen and Mary Gunn’s home. Driven by Dalen’s years of experience in floor coverings, production of one single tool in the Gunn’s garage, often by friends and family that were willing to work for free, soon expanded to an emerging force in the flooring market.

    North Idaho College recently announced the women’s soccer team awards for the 2007 season. Alicia Kahler, goalkeeper from Spokane, Wash., was selected as Most Improved on the NIC team and also made the All-Region 18 team. Kirsten Olson, a defender from Boise, Idaho, received the Newcomer of the Year team award. Central defender Lauren Winterholler from Idaho Falls, Idaho, earned the Most Valuable Defensive Player team award.

  • NIC Foundation awards more than $50,000 in grants

    The North Idaho College Foundation recently announced the recipients of $50,072 in grant money awarded this year through the NIC Foundation Grant Program. Funded by gifts received throughout the year, the NIC Foundation has awarded $719,594 to fund 168 grants over the past 14 years. Of the 22 grants submitted this year from NIC faculty, staff and student organizations, 15 grants were awarded.

    North Idaho College sophomore Shay Craig recently signed to play softball at Texas A&M—Corpus Christi. Craig is a graduate of Timberline High School in Boise, Idaho. She played infield for NIC in the 2006-2007 season and was a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference second team and National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All-Region second team. Craig was a key contributor for the NIC Cardinals starting in all 75 games with a batting average of .358 with 218 at-bats, 47 runs, 78 hits, 11 doubles and four triples.

    In an effort to be responsive to the needs of the local workforce, North Idaho College has developed a new, short-term certificate program in basic manufacturing. Courses for the 19-credit certificate will begin this semester and finish in the spring of 2008. The program will prepare students for work in the manufacturing field, covering manual machine operation, health and safety, blueprint reading and precision measurement. “There is currently a need for manufacturers in the regional workforce,” said Dean of Professional Education Judy Hodge.

    North Idaho College journalism instructor and student newspaper adviser Nils Rosdahl was recently selected as a recipient of the 2007 College Media Advisers Distinguished Adviser Award. The College Media Adviser award is a national award given to an adviser with distinguished service in a particular advising area. Rosdahl has worked at NIC for 23 years, heading NIC’s journalism program and serving as the faculty adviser to the student editors of The Sentinel, NIC’s award-winning student newspaper.

  • NIC Medical Assisting program to start fall 2008

    North Idaho College has received state approval to begin its new Medical Assisting program in August 2008, at the start of fall semester. The program is a five-semester associate’s degree program that prepares students as entry-level health care providers in settings such as physician’s offices, health care clinics and hospitals.

    North Idaho College posted a .4 percent increase in enrollment for fall 2007 with an increase of 19 students from last year’s enrollment of 4,631, bringing the total headcount this year to a record 4,650. “In a time when the economy is booming and work is readily available to those who want it, it’s impressive that our enrollment has increased,” said NIC President Priscilla Bell.

  • Citizens’ Council for the Arts contributes new sculpture to NIC

    After 38 years of successful Art on the Green events at North Idaho College, it is time to reflect. That’s why the Citizens’ Council for the Arts, the sponsor of Art on the Green, and friends of the organization commissioned a sculpture to install permanently on NIC’s campus called “Reflections.” The sculpture was created to honor Patrick Flammia, who was one of the original founders and the first president of the Citizens’ Council for the Arts as well as an artist. “Everyone wanted to do something to honor him; he was loved by many,” said Flammia’s widow Sue. The piece was created by artists Allen Dodge of Coeur d’Alene and Harold Balazs of Mead, Wash., who has several other pieces on display at NIC.

  • NIC grows capacity in several career programs; Some spaces still available for fall

    North Idaho College is building on several of its most popular programs by increasing their capacity. This fall, twice the number of students typically accepted into the NIC Welding and Diesel Technology limited enrollment programs will be allowed to enroll and the Registered Nursing program will be accepting 20 additional students. The expansions in the Welding and Diesel Technology programs were accomplished by adjusting how lab time and classroom time are scheduled to allow for a second class of students to utilize facilities and faculty time.

  • New trades and industry scholarships now available at NIC

    Scholarship applications are now being accepted for students entering one of North Idaho College’s Trades and Industry programs. The scholarships are available through a new Trades and Industry Scholarship Fund established collaboratively by the NIC Foundation, the North Idaho Manufacturing Consortium and the Idaho Department of Labor. Initially, the North Idaho Manufacturing Consortium pledged $15,000 for the scholarship fund, which was immediately matched by the NIC Foundation.

    Space is still available in several limited enrollment North Idaho College health professions programs. Both NIC professional-technical programs, Human Services and Pharmacy Technology, offer an 11-month technical certificate so graduates can enter the workforce quickly. “These are good paying professions and there is a substantial need for qualified professionals in both fields,” said NIC Health Professions and Nursing Director Lita Burns.

  • Missoula man wins $300,000 grand prize house

    An estimated crowd of more than 2,000 ticket holders and community members braved the hot temperatures to see if they were winners in the North Idaho College Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle drawing Wednesday night. More than $335,000 in prizes was given away at the 14th annual event, including the $300,000 custom house built by students in NIC’s carpentry program. Winners were: Grand prize $300,000 custom house—David Adler of Missoula, Mont., with ticket #1900.

  • NIC softball coaching staff named regional coaching staff of the year

    The North Idaho College softball coaching staff was recently named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Coaching Staff of the Year for the West Region. The staff includes NIC Head Softball Coach Don Don Williams and assistant coaches Casi Reisenauer, Ron Bradstreet and Tammy Bradstreet. The coaching staff led the NIC softball team to a second-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament, winning seven straight games following an opening-round loss.

  • NIC Board of Trustees selects Bell as new president

    The North Idaho College Board of Trustees announced today the selection of Priscilla Bell, Ph.D., as the new president of NIC. Bell, who has served as the interim president at NIC since February, will drop the interim from her title upon completion of contract negotiations.
