  • NIC coaching staff and players offer summer softball camp

    Room is still available for players ages 8-18 to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 27-30 at Finucane Park, located on the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and Fourth Street in Hayden. NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp. Both heats will be offered from 8 a.m.

    North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits is offering several kayaking clinics this summer. The Sea Kayak Quickstart clinic is designed for beginners and will provide a brief overview of techniques in addition to a paddle tour of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

  • NIC outdoor power/recreational vehicle student earns certification

    North Idaho College Outdoor Power/Recreational Vehicle Technology student Robert Bjelland of Rathdrum earned an industry technician certification through the Equipment and Engine Training Council. Bjelland works for the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department recreational safety division performing marine and backcountry patrols.

  • NIC announces spring Phi Theta Kappa inductees

    North Idaho College recently announced the Spring Semester 2009 inductees for NIC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. To be eligible, a student must have completed 12 credit hours of courses that can be applied to an associate’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

    By Dylan Caperton NIC journalism student and College Relations intern Students used to research projects by riffling through the card catalog in North Idaho College’s Molstead Library and then scouring the shelves to find the resources they need. That research is now done with a simple click of a mouse. Libraries were some of the first institutions to automate services including catalogs, circulation and the interlibrary loan system that gained momentum in the mid 1980s.

  • NIBCA contributes scholarship through NIC Foundation

    The North Idaho Building Contractors Association presented awards recently to the first recipients of the scholarship established by the NIBCA through the North Idaho College Foundation. Evan Walker, a first-year carpentry student from Coeur d’Alene, received $500. Nicholas Bandy, a second-year carpentry management student from Sandpoint, also received $500.

    The North Idaho College Booster Club announced the winners of this year’s athletics awards following the annual NIC Athletics Hall of Fame Induction, Awards Banquet and Auction held earlier this month. The award recipients were nominated and selected by the NIC coaching staff. The Female Student Athlete of the Year Award was presented to NIC women’s soccer player Natalie Nichols from Post Falls, Idaho.

  • NIC receives share of $16.5 million grant, largest in Idaho history

    Nine colleges and universities from across the state joined together for the announcement of a $16.5 million grant, the largest in Idaho history, from the National Institutes of Health to continue efforts in biomedical research. “North Idaho College encourages and supports undergraduates through the scholars, intern and fellows programs with funds from the National Institutes of Health,” said NIC President Priscilla Bell.

  • SOFTBALL: NIC splits with No. 5 Salt Lake Community College

    The Cardinal softball team snapped a 31-game winning streak for the Salt Lake Community College Bruins on Friday, May 1, and then repeated with another split on Saturday, May 2 in the last weekend of regular season play. The series began with tough competition as both games on Friday went into extra innings.

    Students from North Idaho College’s Resort/Recreation Management program will host the Back In Action three-on-three volleyball tournament Saturday, May 9 in Fort Sherman Park, the grassy area behind the Edminster Student Union Building.   • NIC GED graduation ceremonies to be held across North Idaho

    Instead of holding a large graduation ceremony in Coeur d’Alene this year, North Idaho College GED administrators decided to bring the celebrations directly to the hometowns of students throughout the five northern counties of Idaho. “We thought this would provide a more intimate setting and really take the graduation ceremony directly to the region where all of these students’ accomplishments took place,” said NIC Adult Basic Education/GED Director Rex Fairfield. The 2008-2009 GED Graduation Open House will held at the NIC Adult Education Center in Coeur d’Alene from 4 to 7 p.m.

    Several North Idaho College theater department staff members recently received prestigious national awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for the production of “The Doctor In Spite of Himself” this winter. Former student Jamie Murphy, who studied graphic design/fine arts and theater while attending NIC, received a Meritorious Achievement Award for scenic design of the production.

Melvin Jones, a 5-10 sophomore point guard from Seattle, has committed to play for Portland State University. Jones was named to the All-Scenic West Athletic Conference first team and averaged 13.2 points per game.

  • Human rights activist to speak on women resisting war in Colombia

    Nidia Castellanos, a single mother of three and human rights leader living in war-torn Colombia, will present “Women Resisting War in Colombia” at noon Monday, April 20 in Molstead Library Todd Hall on North Idaho College’s main campus. “This will be my first time in the United States and I’m really looking forward to visiting Idaho,” Castellanos said.

  • Natural resource NIC community education classes offered in Bonners Ferry

    Several community education classes on birds of prey and botany of the Kootenai River area will be offered through the North Idaho College Bonners Ferry Center this spring. “Hunters of the Sky” will teach participants how to identify common birds of prey by listening to their calls and studying eye color, beak design, markings, habitat and flight behavior.

  • NIC men’s basketball player receives NJCAA honors

    North Idaho College men’s basketball player Renado Parker, a forward from Seattle, Wash., was recently named as an All-American through the National Junior College Athletic Association. Parker was one of four freshman named to the NJCAA first team. This season, Parker averaged 14.7 points per game, 6.5 rebounds and 1.26 steals and had a 59.5 field goal percentage.

    North Idaho College and the NIC Foundation will honor longtime community and NIC supporter Josephine Webb for her many contributions to the college during a reception Friday, March 27. Webb has plans to move to Seattle to be closer to her immediate family after 60 years in North Idaho. “For over 40 years, Jo has been active in supporting the college and foundation’s success on so many levels,” said NIC Foundation Director Rayelle Anderson.

  • Seventh-grader from Christian Center School wins regional spelling bee

    Seventh-grader Sabrina Smith from Christian Center School in Coeur d’Alene outspelled 47 other fourth- through eighth-graders from the five northern counties of Idaho to become the champion speller in the sixth annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee March 21 at North Idaho College. Smith, a 13-year-old student from Rathdrum, received a Merriam Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, a $100 Samuel Louis Sugarman U.S.

    North Idaho College machine technology students Joseph Bear of Pinehurst and Wyatt Lassiter of Rathdrum recently earned computer-aided manufacturing certifications through Mastercam. The Mastercam certified programmer certification is a rigorous set of practical tests that demonstrate a programmer’s ability to work effectively with CAM software and produce high quality finished parts on CNC machines.

    The Idaho Small Business Development Center will offer a four-part business workshop series targeted toward small business owners at the North Idaho College Bonners Ferry Center. The “Business Foundations” workshop series will be presented by Idaho Small Business Development Center Region 1 Director Bill Jhung and will cover topics such as marketing, profitability and business planning. Each workshop will be offered from 8:30 a.m.

  • Lake City High School softball player signs with NIC

    Jessica Ross, a senior at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, recently signed a letter of intent to play softball at North Idaho College next season. Ross had a .368 batting average and was on the state runner up team in 2006, her freshman year.

  • NIC basketball players earn tournament/regional honors

    Several North Idaho College men’s and women’s basketball players recently earned tournament and regional awards following the Scenic West Athletic Conference Region 18 tournament March 5-7 at NIC. The NIC women’s team rallied to come back from an 18-point deficit with 11 minutes left in the Region 18 championship game March 7 to beat the College of Southern Idaho 66-61.

    North Idaho College art students will exhibit their mixed media pieces representing the past 75 years during a collaborative art exhibit in the North Idaho College Boswell Hall Corner Gallery. “Collaboration: Images and Ideas” will be on display March 9-27 in celebration of North Idaho College’s 75th anniversary. Students from six art classes on campus, which include drawing 2, oil painting and three-dimensional design, randomly selected calendar years from the year the college opened in 1933 through 2008.

    A collaboration between North Idaho College and KSPS Public Television will come to fruition when five 90-minute documentaries focused on global issues air on KSPS Channel 7 in August. The documentaries are focused on the theme “Earth in Crisis: A Search for Solutions,” which was also the theme of the Popcorn Forum and Convocation Series Symposium held at NIC in March. “With the magnitude of nationally-recognized speakers presenting at the 38th annual Popcorn Forum as well as the urgency of the topic, we decided to bring the issues to an even wider audience by creating these documentaries,” said NIC Political Science Instructor and Popcorn Forum Coordinator Tony Stewart.     North Idaho College’s Workforce Training Center posted a 29.37 percent increase in enrollment for fiscal year 2008. Unduplicated enrollment, which is the total headcount of people taking classes at the Workforce Training Center, is up this year to 7,595 from 5,871 in fiscal year 2007.

  • Coeur d’Alene man wins $300,000 grand prize house in NIC raffle

    Thousands of ticket holders and community members hoping to hear their names called on the loudspeaker turned out Wednesday night to see if they were winners in the North Idaho College Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle drawing. Cash and prizes totaling more than $335,000 were given away at the 15th annual event, including the $300,000 house built by students in NIC’s carpentry program.

  • NIC to offer multi-sport youth summer camp

    After the success of the first ever North Idaho College multi-sport youth summer camp, Outdoor Pursuits is offering an additional camp in August. “Our first camp in June was so successful that we decided to offer a second one,” said Jessica Thompson of Outdoor Pursuits.

  • NIC coaching staff and players offer summer softball camp

    Room is still available for players ages 8-18 to sign up for the North Idaho College’s Cardinal Heat pitching and position play skills camp July 28-31 at Finucane Park, located on the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and Fourth Street in Hayden. NIC’s softball coaching staff and players will lead the camp, which is divided into two heats, one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp. Both heats will be offered from 9 a.m.

  • New cheerleading advisers join NIC athletics

    Two new staff members have joined the North Idaho College athletics department for the 2008-2009 academic year. Dawn Smith will serve as the head cheerleading adviser.

  • NIC to begin new programs this year

    North Idaho College is initiating several new and expanded programs in the 2008-2009 academic year to meet the ever-changing demands of the regional workforce and to provide new options to students. WINGS Dual Credit WINGS, NIC’s dual credit program and an acronym for WIN by getting a Good Start, will expand to offer students professional-technical options for the first time.
