  • WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals Win League Opener

    The Lady Cards poured on the offense in the second half with 63 points to run away with an 86-68 victory over the undefeated Badgers of Snow College. The Badgers held the lead most of the game until the young Cards pulled together scoring 19 straight points.

  • MEN'S SOCCER: Former NIC standout earns Newcomer of the Year Award

    NIC soccer alumnus Renatto Brito (2007-2009) was recently awarded the 2009 Newcomer of the Year Award for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (NCAA Division II) and named to the GNAC Men’s Soccer All-Star Team after an outstanding season with Northwest Nazarene University of Nampa, Idaho.

  • NIC softball players, coaches to lead hitting and pitching clinics

    The North Idaho College softball coaching staff and players will host a variety of clinics in December and January. Several three-session hitting clinics will be offered at the NIC Hitting Facility, located at Walnut and Seventh streets in Coeur d’Alene.

    Students in the new digital video class at North Idaho College didn’t have a lot of classroom time to learn the principles behind video production before jumping into hands-on applications this fall. “This isn’t a subject matter that sinks in from a book,” said NIC Graphic Design Instructor Philippe Valle, who teaches the digital video class as a recently added element to the graphic design degree or certificate at NIC.

  • NIC Foundation announces new board members

    The North Idaho College Foundation Board of Directors recently announced several new members appointed to the 2009-2010 board. The all-volunteer board of directors oversees the NIC Foundation, the college’s private fundraising division.

  • SOFTBALL: NIC softball player signs with Stony Brook University in New York

    North Idaho College softball player Lauren Maloney has signed to play for Stony Brook University, a Division I school in New York. Maloney, of Las Vegas, was a first team All-Region 18 selection in 2009 in addition to being named to the All-Tournament team following the Region 18 tournament.

    The fifth-ranked NIC men's basketball team took to the road, playing in the Central Wyoming Community College tournament, and picked up two more victories to improve to 5-0 on the season.

  • SOFTBALL: Player signs with Adelphi University in New York
    11/11/2009
    North Idaho College softball player Amanda Krier has signed to play for Adelphi University, a Division II school in New York where former NIC softball player and assistant coach Paige Smith now serves as head softball coach. Krier hit a team high .451 batting average in 2009 as well as 12 doubles, two triples and 11 home runs in addition to being named to the All-Region 18 second team.

  • WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals lose in district championship

    The Cardinals were disappointed in the bid to make it back to the national tournament this year when they were beaten by Johnson County Community College 3-0. "Despite the score it was actually a pretty even match," said Cardinals Head Coach Dan Hogan.

  • NIC nursing department receives $50,000 for practical nursing training

    North Idaho College’s nursing department has partnered with the Idaho Department of Labor to provide practical nursing training in rural North Idaho. The Idaho Workforce Development Council recently provided $50,000 in Workforce Investment Act Funds to NIC for practical nursing education for certified nursing assistants in rural communities as a way to help increase the number of licensed health care providers in the region.

  • NIC ISBDC regional director selected for state award

    North Idaho College Idaho Small Business Development Center Regional Director Bill Jhung was recently selected as the 2009 State Star for the Idaho SBDC. “I am pleased to make this announcement and recognize Bill Jhung for extraordinary contributions to the Idaho Small Business Development Center and small businesses in Idaho,” said Idaho SBDC State Director Jim Hogge.

  • Veterans may be eligible for GI Bill benefits at NIC

    The recently announced Post-9/11 GI Bill could provide substantial benefits for veterans seeking education and training at North Idaho College. “The impact of this is great at North Idaho College, because many service men and women who qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill are eligible to receive full tuition and fees at NIC,” said NIC Veterans Coordinator Kecia Siegel. The Post-9/11 GI Bill took effect Aug.

  • NIC ambassadors provide student perspective to new, prospective students

    Five new North Idaho College ambassadors will provide a fresh perspective to new and prospective NIC students this semester. The NIC ambassador program was initiated to create a core of students who could assist the NIC Admissions Office with recruitment activities and act as representatives of NIC to help create a sense of community among students, employees and visitors. To become an ambassador, students must be in good academic standing, be knowledgeable of NIC as well as college programs and activities and maintain professional standards when representing NIC. The following are this year’s ambassadors: Sara Priest is a nursing student from Kellogg. “It was very easy to become involved at NIC,” Priest said.

  • NIC realtor program plays role in housing industry recovery

    When the housing market experienced a boom in the 1990s through the early millennium, the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center was looking at creative ways to admit the record numbers of students enrolling in the real estate program. Enrollment in the program was at an all-time high at a time when the local real estate market was crawling with eager new agents trying to enter the field. “The market is continually changing and eventually slowed and wasn’t able to support all of the students who entered the field during the boom,” said NIC Workforce Training Center Real Estate Pre-Licensing Instructor Fred Albi.

  • NIC orientation program helps increase retention

    Since North Idaho College implemented the Orientation, Advising and Registration Sessions (OARS) program in 2005, retention numbers have increased about 7 percent. But retention is only a byproduct of the true success of the program, which Assistant Dean of Students Alex Harris says is the positive experience new students have when first interacting with North Idaho College. “OARS sets a foundation on which students build their college careers,” Harris said.

  • NIC enrollment up more than 16 percent for fall 2009

    North Idaho College posted a 16.5 percent increase in enrollment for fall 2009 with an increase of 803 students from last year’s enrollment of 4,856, bringing the total headcount this year to a record 5,659. “Like other community colleges across the nation, North Idaho College enrollment is up significantly this fall,” said NIC President Priscilla Bell.

  • NIC Foundation finalizes purchase of mill site

    The North Idaho College Foundation finalized the purchase of the mill site Thursday, July 23 for the total purchase price of $10 million. The NIC Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization, secured financing through Mountain West Bank for the purchase of the 17-acre parcel located to the north of NIC’s main Coeur d’Alene campus, the former site of the DeArmond Mill owned by Stimson Lumber Company.

    With proceeds from their annual holiday gift wrap booth at the Silver Lake Mall, several local Beta Sigma Phi chapters recently contributed $700 to the Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship established through the North Idaho College Foundation. NIC student Whitney Hurt was the most recent recipient of the Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship.

  • NIC softball player signs with Southern Oregon University

    North Idaho College softball player Karri Johnson, a starting pitcher for the Cardinals for the past two years, has signed to play at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Johnson, from British Columbia, helped lead the 2009 Cardinal softball team to a third-place finish in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and a 38-22 record.

  • NIC Workforce Training Center enrollment up 8.9 percent

    North Idaho College’s Workforce Training Center posted an 8.9 percent increase in enrollment for fiscal year 2009. Unduplicated enrollment, which is the total headcount of people taking classes at the Workforce Training Center, is up this year to 8,272 from 7,595 in fiscal year 2008.

  • Post Falls couple wins $300,000 grand prize house in NIC raffle

    Thousands of ticket holders sat in lawn chairs on the grounds of North Idaho College Wednesday night hoping to become winners in the NIC Foundation’s Really BIG Raffle drawing. Cash and prizes totaling more than $335,000 were given away at the 16th annual event, including the $300,000 house built by students in NIC’s carpentry program.
