VOLLEYBALL: No. 3 NIC tops No.1 CSI

10/19/2009

The Lady Cardinals were on the road again this weekend. This time they headed down to Twin Falls, Idaho to play the College of Southern Idaho. Both teams were pumped up and the Golden Eagles of CSI were looking for revenge after to losing to the Cardinals on their home court earlier.

The match started off very intense and the Golden Eagles were able to take Game 1 (23-25). The Lady Cardinals battled back in Game 2 to win (25-13). CSI didn’t back down at all and took Game 3 from the Lady Cardinals (19-25). After intermission, both teams still came back to the court with every intention of winning. The Cardinals prevailed in Game 4 over CSI (25-15). In Game 5, NIC jumped to a lead and had the win in their sights, however, CSI battled back to put up a fight. The Lady Cardinals ended the game with a triumphant win over the Golden Eagles (15-13). Marketa Hanzolova ended the game with an impressive 20 kills, followed by Fei Gao with 13 kills. Kaylee Ponce led in the dig category with 22 digs, with Hannah Thompson right behind with 20 digs. Maddeline Dolny lead both NIC and CSI with setting assists with 48. The team had an impressive night blocking, with 18 total blocks overpowering CSI who had five total blocks.

The Lady Cardinals also had a second match that night, playing Western Wyoming Community College. Obviously tired after battling five games with CSI, the Lady Cardinals fell to the Mustangs in Game 1 (20-25). However, the Cardinals battled and overcame adversity and won the next three games (25-15, 25-14, 25-21).

The Lady Cardinals are back on the road again this weekend to take on the College of Eastern Utah and Colorado Northwestern Community College. They will be back home for their last two home matches on Oct. 29 to play Salt Lake Community College and on Oct. 31 to play Snow College. Please come and support the girls, especially the sophomores because these are their last home games at NIC.
