WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lady Cardinals fall, finish eighth in the nation

3/20/2010 The NIC Lady Cardinals saw their season come to an end with a 73-61 loss to Copiah-Lincoln College in the consolation championship at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national basketball tournament in Salina, Kan. NIC finished 2-2 in the tournament to end the season with an overall record of 28-8. Even with the loss the Lady Cardinals finish the season in the top 10 in the nation for the second straight season!

In the game versus Copiah-Lincoln the Cardinals got down 12-0 to start the game and never led in the contest. That was eventually the final margin of victory as the Cardinals could not overcome 18 percent shooting in the first half, making only five of 25 field goal attempts. Meanwhile the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves led 33-19 at half, shooting 51 percent. Most of their attempts were on layups after forcing nine first half turnovers on the Cardinals. Kiki Edwards-Teasley had seven first half points to keep the Cardinals close.

In the second half, the Cardinals fought back to get within five points at 42-37 with nine minutes left. After another spurt by the Wolves to increase the deficit to double digits, the Cardinals got within four with 6:20 left but never got closer. Freshman forward Tugce Canitez earned her fourth double-double of the tournament with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but shot only four of 14 from the field. Edwards-Teasley was the only other player to reach double-figures for the Cards, as it appeared that four games in five days took its toll on the team. The Cardinals shot only 31 percent for the game and had 20 turnovers.
The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves meanwhile had five players in double figures, led by Rachel Vigers’ 20 points and seven rebounds. Vigers made nine of 12 field attempts to help the Wolves shoot 50 percent for the game.

Congratulations to head coach Chris Carlson and the Lady Cardinals for an outstanding season. The outlook for next season looks good with 10 freshmen on the current roster.
