The recently announced Post-9/11 GI Bill could provide substantial benefits for veterans seeking education and training at North Idaho College.

“The impact of this is great at North Idaho College, because many service men and women who qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill are eligible to receive full tuition and fees at NIC,” said NIC Veterans Coordinator Kecia Siegel.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill took effect Aug. 1 and the only requirement to be eligible for benefits is that the service member must have served at least 90 days in active duty after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. This makes members of the National Guard and Reserves eligible for GI Bill benefits if they spent at least 90 days activated during the war.

A veteran who has never utilized the GI Bill benefits is eligible for 36 months of benefits through the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Even if a service member had previously exhausted their GI Bill benefits, an additional 12 months of entitlement will be awarded as long as the service member served 90 days in active duty after Sept. 11.

In addition, the benefit will pay $1,127 per month for a housing allowance for veterans enrolled in seven or more credits, with at least one-credit offered on campus. The GI Bill also pays a book stipend of $41.67 per credit with a maximum of $1,000 per year.
