WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cardinals win last regular season match
10/31/2009
The Cardinal women's soccer team traveled to Spokane to face the Gonzaga University women's club team in its final regular season match. The Cards finished strong receiving their eighth win of the season on a Lauren Linford goal in the 85th minute of the match.
The Bulldogs scored first when Alli Scott slipped a ball under a diving NIC goalkeeper Amanda Wemple. The Cardinals were undaunted as they have been behind in other matches this year and about 10 minutes later their confidence was rewarded when freshman forward Meagan Powell got her toe on a cross from Whitney Gerleman and directed the ball past the Gonzaga goalkeeper.
The second half remained scoreless until the Bulldog keeper mishandled a ball on the left side of the penalty area and Linford collect the free ball, turned 180 degrees and put a 25-yard shot into the open goal.
NIC heads to Overland Park, Kansas next to face off with the winner of Region 9 (Laramie County Community College in Wyoming) and the Region 6 champion (Johnson County Community College in Kansas). The Cardinals will meet the winner of the game between the two other regions on Saturday, Nov. 7 to earn a birth to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament in Tyler, Texas.
