WRESTLING: Cards fall to Boise State

11/4/2009

After a monumental victory Oct. 30, the Cards made a short trip to West Valley High School in Spokane Oct. 31 to wrestle Boise State University. Boise is ranked ninth in the nation for Division I schools. They have also been Pac 10 champions for the past two years.

“It was a good experience,” said NIC head coach Pat Whitcomb. “You can look at it two ways. You can go out and try to keep it close or you can go out and make a statement. I think we did.”

Whitcomb said that although they lost, his athletes were prepared and competed well.

“Our goal is to wrestle the toughest schedule we can,” Whitcomb said. “Then when we get to the nationals it’s not usually the toughest tournament they’ve been in."

Although the Cards lost 30-12, they took three matches, an improvement over only one last season. Nick Harris (141) defeated Brad Perry 8-6, followed by Eric Luna with a pin in 6:13. Then Kamron Jackson (197) took on Matt Cosperson for another win 7-5. Roger McCovey only lost the heavyweight class by riding time 4-3.

The dual is a fund-raiser for the Graham Morrinson Memorial Scholarship. It is organized by Scott Jones whose son Levi wrestles for Boise State.

The Cardinal’s current overall record is 600-59-3, with an overall season record of 1-1.
