Works by artist Morse Clary featured in NIC Corner Gallery exhibit

11/6/2009

Artist Morse Clary views books as containers and conveyors of knowledge and information, which is represented in his unique drawings, sculptures and book forms that will be on exhibit Nov. 9 through Dec. 11 in North Idaho College’s Boswell Hall Corner Gallery.

“They are tactile, having weight and textural qualities,” Clary said. “The journey I am presently on with books explores what possibilities might exist for content outside the predictability of the expected. Viewers are asked to approach this content to find meanings which are in the visual and tactile language of lines and shapes, textures and colors, rhythms and contrasts.”

Clary’s works represent journeys, some simply on how forms occupy spaces and others are the results of real journeys in which experiences were transposed into the artwork itself.

“These books should be approved as interesting objects whose meanings are the organization of visual and tactile parts,” Clary said.

Clary holds a master’s degree in fine art with an emphasis in sculpture from the University of Idaho and has done post-graduate work in art history and Northwest Indian Art at Central Washington State University and printmaking at the University of Idaho.

He has taught art throughout Idaho, Washington and Ohio, and currently is a professor emeritus at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash.

His work has been exhibited throughout the Inland Northwest in exhibits such as the “Celebrating the Book” Exhibit in the steamboat Springs Art Center in Santa Fe, N.M., as well as a three-person show at the Friesen Gallery in Seattle.

The opening reception for the “Journeys and Journals” exhibit will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the gallery. A gallery walk with the artist will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 followed by a slide and lecture presentation at 1 p.m. in Boswell Hall Room 102.

Boswell Hall Corner Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be closed Nov. 25-27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
