Diversity speaker to present community workshop at NIC

Well-known human rights and diversity speaker Sam Byrd will present a free community workshop focused on “Creating Inclusive Communities and Organizations” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 in the Lake Coeur d'Alene Room of Edminster Student Union Building on North Idaho College's main campus. Byrd has more than 25 years experience working with cross-cultural and organizational development issues with a variety of public and private sector organizations. He is the owner and president of Diversity Works, a firm that provides cross-cultural and diversity training and consulting. From southern Idaho, Byrd has been active on the Task Force on Hispanic Education, the Idaho Committee on Indian Education, the Idaho Inclusiveness Coalition, the Council on Hispanic Education and the University of Idaho's Diversity and Human Rights Committee. He is the recipient of the 2003 Hewlett-Packard Distinguished Leadership in Human Rights Award, the 1998 Howard Swearer Humanitarian Award and the 1998 Boise State University Women's Center Larry G. Selland Humanitarian Award. Byrd's interactive workshop at NIC is free and open to the community. Participants must pre-register by contacting Lynn Covey at (208) 769-3370 or lbcovey@nic.edu. The workshop is sponsored by the NIC Diversity Events Committee, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Latino Outreach Project, DIRNE Community Health Clinic, Hispanic American Society at Fairchild Airforce Base and the Regional Substance Abuse Authority.
