NIC Silver Valley Center to celebrate grand opening
The North Idaho College Silver Valley Center welcomed students with the beginning of spring semester in January, but now will open its doors to the whole community with a grand opening celebration Saturday, Feb. 12.
The event will include an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, located at 323 Main Street in Kellogg.
A short program will kickoff the event with brief presentations by NIC President Michael Burke, NIC Trustee Rolly Williams, Rep. Mary Lou Shepherd, Shoshone County Commissioners Chair Jim Vergobbi and Kellogg Mayor Mac Pooler.
“The culmination of a dream for both the Silver Valley and North Idaho College is now a reality,” Burke said. “The NIC Silver Valley Center has opened for business, thanks to hard work and determination on the part of many, many people and organizations.”
The NIC Silver Valley Center resulted from an agreement with the City of Kellogg last August allowing the college to operate the Silver Valley Center from the old Kellogg City Hall.
The facility contains two classrooms, an interactive video conferencing room for distance education courses and a computer lab accessible to all students. The lab will boast high-speed Internet capabilities and a network system that can be monitored and troubleshot almost entirely from tech support on NIC's main campus in Coeur d'Alene.
The Silver Valley Center will provide academic and community education courses as well as Adult Basic Education/GED services, applications for college admission, registration, advising, financial aid, student photo identification, placement testing, test proctoring and tutoring on site.
The Silver Valley Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays (closed from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.) and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The grand opening celebration is free and open to the public.
