NIC volleyball team finishes regular season ranked fourth in the NJCAA

The North Idaho College volleyball team finished the regular season Nov. 9 with a 30-4 record (9-1 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference). The Cardinals tied for first in the SWAC with the No. 1-ranked College of Southern Idaho.
 
NIC will play the College of Eastern Utah of Price, Utah Friday, Nov. 11 at the Region 18A tournament hosted by CSI in Twin Falls. CSI will play Snow College of Ephraim, Utah. The winners of the two games will play Saturday, Nov. 12 for a berth to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament Nov. 21-23 in West Plains, Mo.
 
The NIC volleyball team moved up in the national polls throughout the season, breaking into the poll as the ninth-ranked team in September. The Cardinals finished the regular season ranked fourth in the NJCAA Division 1 poll after a major win over the No. 1-ranked CSI at home Oct. 29.
 
Sophomore middle hitter Melissa Merchant of Oakley, Calif., and freshman outside hitter Cintia Alessi of Curitiba, Brazil were selected as the NJCAA Division I co-players of the week for Oct. 16-22, the first time NIC players have been selected for this national honor.
 
Freshman middle hitter Daidre Mendenhall of Spokane, Wash., finished fourth in the SWAC with a .373 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Collese Dornan of Fife, Wash., Merchant and Alessi all finished in the top 10 hitting percentage for SWAC play.
 
Alessi finished fourth in the SWAC for kills with 278 this season. Freshman outside hitter Konae Purcell of Aiea, Hawaii finished seventh with 214 kills and Dornan finished 10th with 202.
 
Dornan averaged 6.52 assists per game and freshman setter Lacy Anderson of Spokane, Wash., had 5.07 assists per game. Sophomore libero Katie Lippi of Sandpoint, Idaho had 35 service aces this season.
 
Merchant finished second in the SWAC with 85.0 total blocks and Mendenhall finished third with 83.0. 
 
Alessi had 298 digs this season and Lippi had 250. Freshman outside hitter from Spokane, Wash., Kayla Mainer also finished in the SWAC top 10 with 146 digs.
