NIC community education classes offered in the Silver Valley

There’s still room to enroll in community education classes focused on creating birdhouses and weaving baskets offered in the Silver Valley this spring through the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center.

“Make a Gourd Birdhouse” will be offered in one session from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 at the NIC Silver Valley Center, located at 323 Main St. in Kellogg.

The class teaches the skill of making a one-of-a-kind birdhouse using a gourd and weaving techniques.

The class is open to people of all ability levels. The course fee is $39.

The one-session class “Random Weave Basket” will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18 at the NIC Silver Valley Center.

Participants will make an organic basket in a nontraditional style of weaving in which a random weave includes elements of both warp (spokes) and weft (weaver).

Both classes will be taught by Carol Combes, who has been weaving baskets for 19 years in addition to exhibiting work in galleries throughout the Northwest.

The course fee is $39. Space is limited.
