Heinrich Barnes, two-time All-American wrestler for North Idaho College, signed a letter-of-intent to Oregon State this week.
The NIC sophomore from South Africa won national championship honors in February at the NJCAA National Tournament in Rochester, Minn. in the 141-pound class. Barnes, ranked No. 2 going into nationals, won 13-11 over Iowa Central’s Joe Soto in the championship match. He finished the season with a 40-3 record including an undefeated record against junior college opponents.
He earned his first All-American honors at NIC in 2006, placing fifth at the NJCAA National Tournament and finishing the season with a 29-8 record, leading the team in both pins (12) and nearfalls.
Barnes, a business management major, came to NIC with an impressive career in South Africa. He is a former South African national champion and captured an eighth-place finish at the Junior World Championships.
“We're real excited he’s going to Oregon State, the defending Pac 10 champions," said NIC wrestling coach Pat Whitcomgb. "Jim Zalensky their new coach and assistant coach Kevin Roberts, formerly of NIC, have a great program. This will be good for Oregon State and for Heinrich.”
