North Idaho College Security Officer Kelly Hopkins was certified as a Rape Aggression Defense system instructor recently.
Hopkins trained for the certification test at Central Washington University. The R.A.D. system sets the national standard for self-defense education as a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. It is a comprehensive, women-only course that teaches awareness, prevention, risk-reduction and risk-avoidance, while giving the basics of hands-on defense training.
NIC Director of Facilities Operations Mike Halpern said he hopes to purchase equipment next year that would allow Hopkins to offer this self-defense course as a class for employees and students.
