Cardinals from both the North Idaho College women’s and men’s basketball teams were named Athlete of the Week for the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Jalil Abdul-Bassit, from Anchorage, Alaska was honored for the men and Georgia Stirton, from Melbourne, Australia was honored for the women.
“This is great recognition for both of these athletes. It was an exceptional week of play for both teams over quality opponents,” said Al Williams, NIC athletics director. “Both Jalil and Georgia stood out against tough competition.”
Freshman point guard Stirton had 11 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds against Salt Lake Community College in NIC’s 68-54 victory on Jan. 26. Sophomore wing Abdul-Bassit had 26 points and six rebounds in NIC’s 87-78 win against SLCC. Against Snow College on Jan. 24, Abdul-Bassit had 28 points and Stirton had 8 points, five assists and three steals.
The Jan. 26 victory gives the men’s basketball team a 21-3 overall and 8-1 in conference record. The men’s team leads Salt Lake by a half game in the SWAC, with a rank of No. 10 in the latest NJCAA poll. The Lady Cardinals improved to a 23-1 and 8-1 in conference record, which leads the SWAC. The women’s team maintained the No. 2 spot in the rankings for the fourth consecutive week.
Both teams play rival College of Southern Idaho at home Saturday, Feb. 2 in Christianson Gym. The women’s game starts at 3 p.m. and the men’s game tips off at 5 p.m.
