The North Idaho College wrestling team finished this weekend’s National Junior College Athletic Association Region 18 tournament in Clackamas, Ore. as regional champions. NIC won with a team score of 136.5, 23 points over Clackamas, who took second at 113.5 and Northwest Wyoming College in third with 98.4. NIC qualified all 10 wrestlers to the national tournament in Iowa and NIC Head Wrestling Coach Pat Whitcomb was honored as regional Coach of the Year. The Cardinals finished the regular season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country.
Brock Banta (125), Michael Carreon (133), Jeremy Golding (149), Ryan Zumwalt (165), and VJ Guilio (197) earned regional championships. Jarrett Morrill (141), Kyle Sweedman (174), and Caleb Rivera (184) earned second and Nico Moreno (157) and Curtis Berger (285) earned third. The top four placers qualify for nationals.
The wrestling team will see their next action in Des Moines, Iowa Feb. 22-23 at the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament.
