Community Education

Customized Training

Develop, deliver, and promote Customized Training programs and related services that meet or exceed customer expectations. Conduct our work activities in a professional and ethical manner that is consistent with the established mission and standards    of North Idaho College.


 

Idaho Small Business Development Center

To enhance the success of small businesses in Idaho by providing high-quality consulting and training.


 

Qualified Worker Retraining Program

Administer the WIA Adult program resources as defined by WIA regulations and the local NIWIB (North Idaho Workforce Investment Board).  Deliver services to qualified individuals in a professional, dignified, ethical and compliant manner that reflects the established mission and standards of North Idaho College and Workforce Investment Act.


Workforce Development and Apprenticeships

Develop, deliver and review open enrollment, courses that meets the needs of the student-community.

Academic Programs


American Indian Studies

Provide a curriculum of study for Indians and non-Indians about the ancient and contemporary experiences, values, issues, and ways of life of American Indians from their perspective.  Provide whatever services necessary to ensure Native American student success at NIC and beyond.

 


 

Anthropology

The Anthropology Department is committed to providing theories, substance, methods, case studies, and application required to understand the nature, causes, and implications of various forms of human societies.


 

Biology

Encourage students to observe and record the wonderful variety of life. We nurture scientific reasoning through exploration of the unifying principles of Biology. We are committed to staying current with the theories and technologies necessary for student success. We partner with our students by striving to maintain the highest academic standards possible.


 

Business Administration

The mission of the Business Administration program is to provide academic transfer courses in the Business Administration applicable to degree programs; provide elective transfer courses that meet core requirements in social science, mathematics, general education, and computer literacy for the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or the Associate of Applied Science degrees; and provide theory and skills for entry-level to mid-managerial employees, new and developing entrepreneurs, and individuals seeking retraining, upgrading, and personal enrichment.

Letters and science education in chemistry and environmental science.


 

Child Development

The NIC Child Development program is committed to providing students with knowledge and experiences that will assist them in becoming reflective teachers of young children.  The program will develop student skills in supporting the growth and development of children birth to age eight by creating inclusive, developmentally appropriate environments, creating partnerships with families, and collaborating with other early childhood professionals. Coursework will prepare students to successfully transfer to four year institutions, and/or receive a national Child Development Associate credential.

 


 

College Skills Division

The North Idaho College Skills Division is committed to providing high quality instruction and support to academically under-prepared students in order to enhance their ability to access and benefit from higher education and/or training.


 

Computer Science

The Computer Science Department at North Idaho College is committed to student success, teaching excellence, and lifelong learning.  The department strives to provide the highest attainable standards of quality in educational experiences for our students, both majors and non-majors,  in the classroom, in the campus community and within the North Idaho regional community.  Our primary task for majors is to ensure that our students have  a freshman and sophomore experience that allows students to transfer seamlessly into their four year school. For non-majors, we seek to provide important computer knowledge and skills that allows students who already use computers  to add to  their skills and fluency with computers.

To provide the highest quality educational opportunities, we make every effort to provide instructors with the resources needed for professional development and to create meaningful experiences in the classroom.


 

Education

The mission of the Department of Education is to provide a program for students which emphasizes:

  • Stimulating learning through reflection and experience
  • Valuing equality and diversity as an essential ingredient of a democratic society
  • Becoming inquirers and creative problem-solvers to serve their community and profession
  • Maintaining oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Integrating technology into the curricula

English

The English Department maintains a welcoming and personal environment which presents students with unique and challenging educational experiences that will expand their perspectives, empower their choices, enhance their ability to critically evaluate and to appreciate diverse ideas, and to meet any writing demands they encounter as professionals or continuing students. By nurturing an integrated relationship among the professional, technical, and liberal arts language skills, the English Department not only helps students become better readers and writers, but also promotes their success across the curriculum and encourages life-long learning.


 

Fine Art

To engage the imagination, foster flexible ways of thinking, develop disciplined effort, and build critical thinking skills.


 

Foreign Language

The Foreign Language Department at North Idaho College is committed to providing quality language learning opportunities for its students through both dedicated instruction and modern, high-quality laboratory resources.


 

Geology/Geography

Maintain faculty and facilities necessary to provide teaching excellence in Geology and Geography. Promote student success through teaching and advising to enable students to gain knowledge and skills for completion of an NIC educational program, transfer to another institution of higher learning, enter the workforce, or be a lifelong learner.


 

Graphic Design

Empower students to create portfolios that earn them respect and positions in the communication industry.


 

History

The mission of the North Idaho College History Program is to enhance the quality of students’ lives in the following ways:

  • Promoting in our students a “sense of history”
  • Helping students to understand the present through a knowledge of the past
  • Teaching the important analytical skills basic to all critical evaluation, decision making, and problem solving
  • Promoting geographical literacy
  • Promoting cultural literacy, especially as regards historical individuals and events
  • Promoting information literacy, especially in conducting historical research
  • Promoting social responsibility and citizenship through an awareness of how political systems develop and the citizens’ responsibilities within those systems

 

Humanities

Through Hums 101, Montage:  Introduction to the Humanities, the Humanities Department strive—through well-prepared instructors and creative instruction and with up-to-date technology—to provide a foundation for students to pursue further humanities study.  This core course introduces various genres to the students and through specific inquiry questions allows them to participate and interact responsibly with others, use critical thinking to study human values and to articulate their interpretations of artifacts in the humanities with supporting evidence in both conversation and writing. 


 

Journalism

Prepare students for careers in journalism or communications through knowledge and skills gained by class work, theoretical training and laboratory workshop methods.


 

Music

The program offered by the Music Department of North Idaho College provides its students with an up-to-date and solid foundation in music theory, history, appreciation and performance. It takes an active role providing general education core offerings for non-music majors as well as music course offerings designed for the first two years of a music major degree, to be completed at a transfer institution. Additionally, the Department serves a wide-reaching role in the North Idaho community by providing a center for musical activity through its varied course offerings and performances.


 

Nursing - Associate Degree

The mission of the Associate Degree Nursing Program is to provide the opportunity for individuals to acquire the education necessary for entry into the profession of nursing as a Registered Nurse, and to provide the community with nurses to function in a variety of health care delivery settings.



Philosophy
Introduce students to fundamental benefits of philosophy: the examination of the philosophical questions central to human existence, an appreciation for philosophical inquiry itself, and the application of the results to their own lives. Enthuse students with the joy of philosophy and improve the quality of life for them and their communities.


 

Photography

The Photography department is committed to the college’s strategic plan and the institutional vision it supports. We are proud of our long tradition of providing high quality courses taught by qualified instructors.

The department teaches individuals to explore themselves and the world around them through the creation of unique photographic images. Courses offered explore a broad spectrum of photographic skills and styles. Additional courses will be created to keep pace with changes in the field. NIC photography courses form a firm foundation for anyone wishing to persue significant study in the field, and for others wishing to improve basic skills.


 

Physical Education/Dance

The Physical Education Program at North Idaho College teaches people how to enjoy and participate in physical activity over a lifetime.  This mission is accomplished by teaching fundamentals in the art and science of human movement, meeting the needs and interests of the population we serve, and utilizing the resources available at North Idaho College.


 

Physics and Engineering

The Physics and Engineering Department helps the NIC student achieve his/her educational goals.  These goals may include an Associate’s degree, transfer to another college or university or life-long learning.


 

Political Science

The Political Science Department’s philosophy reflects the belief that students should understand the workings of government and public policy and encounter political and social diversity


 

Psychology

To develop in our students an appreciation and understanding of the basic principles underlying psychology, to prepare them for higher level course work, to promote scholarship in our students, and assist psychology majors in identifying career options.


 

Social Work

The social work department is committed to the preparation of entry-level generalist practitioner’s with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to help families, groups, individuals, and communities to solve social problems. 


 

Sociology

The Sociology Department at North Idaho College affirms the primary mission to provide rigorous, high quality instruction by assisting students in learning to "think sociologically" in order to define, analyze, and understand human behavior in a variety of settings, broadening knowledge of culture and society and increasing understanding and appreciation of the meanings of human diversity.  In the process, sociology courses strive to help prepare students who wish to continue studies at a 4-year institution while at the same time providing a valuable component in the general education of all students.


 

Speech Communication

The Department of Speech Communication is committed to student success, teaching excellence and life long learning by providing quality educational experiences that enable students to transfer to colleges and universities.  Our goal is  to teach communication skills that apply to success in all phases of human interaction including personal relationships, professional competence and community involvement.


 

Theatre

To nurture the passion for the theatre art form in our theatre students and develop the appreciation of theatre in the general student body, to provide high quality instruction for the theatre majors and general student body, to provide experiences that enhance the skills of students so that they can succeed in their goals, and to provide a resource for faculty, staff and community members who desire theatrical experiences as part of their on-going life education.

Alumni Association

The purpose of the North Idaho Alumni Association is to encourage a lifelong interest in North Idaho College by its alumni and friends.  This will be accomplished by creating programs that serve alumni and by creating opportunities for alumni to serve North Idaho College and its students.


 

Athletics

The Department of Athletics strives to provide a comprehensive program that promotes positive educational, physical and mental pursuits through local, regional and national competition in intercollegiate athletics. All athletic programs are committed to providing students with the opportunity to succeed as athletes in competition, as students in the classrooms and labs of NIC, and as good citizens in the communities where they live.

Our mission is to provide responsive and effective service while facilitating academic missions and fiscal integrity.  To provide excellent customer service to students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, campus departments and external organizations while maintaining an environment that values people and fosters respect.

College Relations

College Relations contributes to student success by supporting and promoting the programs and services of North Idaho College. This is accomplished through the creation and implementation of appropriate communication and marketing strategies to internal and external audiences through promotions, publications, photography, advertising, media relations, and special events.


 

Computer Services

Our mission is to research, apply and manage information technology to foster productive working and learning environments.  We provide this support for the benefit of the people of NIC.  We endeavor to do this in a spirit of cooperation, teamwork and our personal commitment to excellence.


 

Development/Foundation

To secure external financial support to advance the mission of North Idaho College.

To coordinate grant and appropriation development based on institutional priorities.


 

Human Resources Department

Provide customer-centered, quality human resource services through professional competency, innovation, and teamwork in support of the mission of North Idaho College.

Planning, Assessment, and Research

Provide the direction, processes, educational activities, and institutional research to support campus-wide planning and assessment efforts that lead to continuous improvement of NIC’s departments, programs, processes, and services.

Provide professional, competent, and informed leadership and management of North Idaho College within the structure of the stated policies and mission, vision and values of the institution.

Auxiliary Services


Auxiliary Services

Auxiliary Services will provide quality service and facilities to students, staff and guests of North Idaho College.    It is our intent to remain financially solvent by maintaining a revenue generating, self-supporting operation.



Bookstore
The North Idaho College Bookstore is operated as part of the Auxiliary Services of North Idaho College.  The store is a self-supporting operation, utilizing revenues to offset expenses of inventory, staffing, utilities, equipment, maintenance and repair, and other general expense categories.  The store is a for-profit enterprise, providing goods and services to students, faculty, staff, the college, and the general public.  Revenue generated by operations is utilized within the scope of the Student Union operation, of which the bookstore is a part.  These funds are accounted for through the Student Services Fee Account.


 

Food Services

To provide high quality, creative food products and hospitality services to the college and community, and be recognized as the leader in the industry by becoming a highly efficient customer service TEAM.  Our goal is to provide each quest an exceptional experience, not just a meal.


 

Residence Hall

The Residential Life Program is dedicated to providing safe / comfortable housing and enhance your college experience through fun social activities, dynamic educational programs and opportunities to become involved with your campus living community.


 

Student Union

The Edminster Student Union as the center of the North Idaho College community strives to complement the academic processes and enrich the college experience by providing cultural, social recreational and intellectual experiences, to be shared by the entire community.

Instructional Support Departments


Center for New Directions

To provide activities and services that help displaced homemakers, single parents and other adults in transition to achieve self-sufficiency and to increase the success and retention of North Idaho College Professional- Technical students.


 

Children's Center

The Children’s Center is committed to providing a family-centered early childhood program that views every child as capable and competent.  The Center will provide a nurturing and supportive environment that links home and school, that is rich with opportunities to develop social competence, and that encourages every child to pursue intellectual growth and creativity through their interests and experiences.


 

Distance Education

The Office of Distance Education and Dual Enrollment of North Idaho College helps meet the changing needs of students by facilitating access to student-centered, effective, innovative, flexible, life-long educational opportunities. We commit to continuous improvement and to efficient resource use.


 

Instructional Media Services

The Instructional Media Services Department of Learning Resources exists to provide centralized leadership, technical, operational and creative support for the effective use of instructional technologies at North Idaho College.  Instructional Media Service’s ultimate goal is to facilitate excellence in the teaching and service functions of the college.  Assist in maintaining high standards in equipment, media formats, design, and content within North Idaho College and other state colleges and universities.


 

Learning Resources / Molstead Library
Molstead Library supports the mission of North Idaho College as articulated in its Strategic Plan.   Encourages information literacy, critical thinking, and the acquisition of knowledge by providing access to diverse materials and current information technologies; and by also providing instruction in the use and evaluation of those materials and technologies.   Selects, purchases, classifies, organizes, stores, retrieves, interprets and teaches the use of print, audio-visual, microform, electronic, and Web-based information to support North Idaho College’s curricula and to encourage lifelong learning and enhance the quality of life for students, staff and the community served by North Idaho College.



Professional-Technical Program Development

To promote North Idaho College professional technical education as a critical component of a comprehensive community college that meets the developing and/or unmet educational, training, economic development and other needs as identified by internal and external groups.



Trades and Industry Division

The Trades and Industry Division will diligently strive to enhance all aspects of the student experience while enrolled in a Professional-Technical Education Program.



TRIO - Educational Opportunities Center

To assist eligible adults to enroll in postsecondary education.



TRIO - Student Support Services
The purpose of Student Support Services is to provide support services to low-income, first-generation, and disabled college students to increase retention, graduation, and transfer rates.

Professional-Technical Departments

Accounting Assistant Program
The Accounting Assistant Program at North Idaho College provides students with the opportunity to learn the skills needed to obtain employment in the field of accounting / bookkeeping.  This is accomplished by providing the basic coursework in accounting, general education courses, and other courses needed to increase the employability of students.


Applied Technology (ATEC)
To provide students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for successful performance in the workplace.  To prepare students for the job search process.



Automotive Technology
The Automotive Technology program mission is to prepare men and women for entry into the work force as automotive technicians.  This program gives them job entry level skills suitable for working in a variety of dealership, independent, specialty, or fleet shop settings



Business & Office Technology
The Business and Office Technology Department at North Idaho College prepares students for successful careers as office professionals and offers opportunities for upgrading existing abilities.



Carpentry

The Carpentry program mission is to provide participating students the hands-on skills and technical knowledge needed to enter the field of construction as carpenters, while also developing the attitudes and other factors necessary for successful performance in a competitive workplace



Collision Repair Technology
The Collision Repair Technology program mission is to provide industry with competent, fundamentally sound, entry-level technicians and to help encourage, shape, and cultivate students’ desires to achieve their goals while also instilling in them a desire to pursue lifelong learning.



Computer Information Technology Program
The mission of the Computer Information Technology Program is to utilize state-of-the-art equipment with educators that hold current certifications to prepare students for professional employment in targeted areas within the Information Technology industry.



Culinary Arts
We teach our students the broad base general knowledge and specific skills necessary to achieve an entry level position in food service and grow into positions of Excellence, Leadership, Professionalism, ethics, and respect for diversity are the core values that guide our efforts.



Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program mission is to provide learning experiences to enhance students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes as related to the diesel, truck, and heavy equipment industry.  The program uses a competency-based approach in developing entry-level employment skills and lifelong learning opportunities that meet both the students’ and community employers’ needs.



Drafting Design and Technology
The Drafting Design and Technology department mission is to provide learning experiences to enhance students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes as related to the entry level employment through a competency-based approach and to instill a desire in students to pursue lifelong learning opportunities that meet both the students’ and community employers’ needs.



Electronics Technology
The Electronics Technology program mission is to prepare students for entry-level employment in the electronics field.



Human Services
The Human Services program is designed to prepare students for a variety of entry-level positions in institutions and community based agencies that provide psychosocial, community support, and educational services.



HVAC/R
The HVAC/R program mission is to develop well-prepared entry-level HVAC/R technicians for the HVAC/R industry.



Law Enforcement
The Law Enforcement Program provides Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) instruction in Basic Law Enforcement to allow students to become POST Certifiable as a Peace Officer in the State of Idaho, as well as obtain their A.A.S. Degree.  This mission is accomplished by providing a cadre of POST Certified Instructors to teach the latest methods of law enforcement theory and application.  Area law enforcement agencies are actively involved in the selection, training and placement of students as interns.



Machine Technology
The Machine Technology program mission is to supply technically competent and attitudinally aligned graduates for the area’s manufacturing enterprises and to supply credible education with appropriate methodologies to encourage student lifelong learning.



Maintenance Mechanic/Millright
The mission of the Maintenance Mechanic/Millwright program is to prepare students for employment as industrial plant mechanics or millwrights.  This is accomplished by providing learning experiences to enhance students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes as related to industrial plant maintenance.  The program uses a competency-based approach in developing entry-level employment skills and lifelong learning opportunities that meet both the students’ and community employers’ needs.



Nursing - Practical Nursing
North Idaho College’s Practical Nursing Program is committed to student success by providing the highest quality education and teaching excellence. By helping students reach their potential in providing professional and caring health care, North Idaho College’s Practical Nursing Program will enhance the quality of the life of the student as well as the community and provide a resource for lifelong learning. 



Pharmacy Technology
To educate competent pharmacy technicians that are prepared to find employment in institutional and/or ambulatory pharmacy settings.



Radiography Technology

The mission of the Radiography Technology program is to prepare individuals for entry level practice as certified radiologic technologists in a variety of settings including but not limited to hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers.

Advising Services

North Idaho College Advising Services is committed to connecting students with appropriate resources to help them make informed and responsible decisions, set realistic goals, and develop life management skills to meet present and future needs.


 

American Indian Minority Student Advising

Provide and support services for the American Indian and Minority students of North Idaho College.  Help promote student success and campus diversity.


 

Career Counseling Services

North Idaho College Career Services provides high quality, responsive career counseling, resources, and education to students, prospective students, and alumni, to help ensure that their education is purposeful, to assist them in choosing and achieving meaningful career and life goals, and to increase their lifelong opportunities for success.


 

Center for Educational Access

CEA is committed to the development of educational accessibility and the promotion of sensitivity and awareness of disability issues on the NIC campus and in the community.


 

Conferencing and Events
The Office of Conferencing & Campus Events supports the mission of North Idaho College as articulated in its Strategic Plan and serves as an informational clearinghouse for all conferences and events that take place at North Idaho College by scheduling, coordinating and facilitating the use of all college facilities and grounds.


 

Counseling

Counseling at North Idaho College is dedicated to helping students identify and overcome personal barriers to success.


 

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office at North Idaho College is committed to facilitating student access to financial resources available on the Federal, State, and local level to support student success.


 

Registrar's Office

Serve students, faculty, staff, administration and the public by maintaining accurate student records. Provide information, when appropriate, regarding academics, registration, and other statistical data pertinent to office.


 

Student Activities / ASNIC

The Student Activities Office serves as a gateway to involvement at North Idaho College. We provide opportunities to enhance the academic experience, foster leadership development, promote social interaction, and encourage community building.  The Student Activities  staff encourages and challenges students to think critically and actively participate in the programs and services offered in the areas of Intramural Sports, Outdoor Pursuits, student government, and student activities. The outcome of these experiences is an integration of the students' development in and out of the classroom.

ASNIC Mission: As representatives of the Associated Students of North Idaho College, it is our purpose to promote unity, serve students and be a strong student voice campus wide.


 

Student Activities:  Intramural Sports

The Student Activities program is open to all North Idaho College students, faculty, and staff.  The goal of the program is to enhance the quality of student life by providing a wide array of activities designed to meet the varied needs of the campus community.  Regardless of one’s skill level, individuals are encouraged to get involved, “FOR THE FUN OF IT.”


 

Student Activities:  Outdoor Pursuits

Outdoor Pursuits exercises both body and mind through wilderness-based, environmentally sound outdoor adventures. Our activities foster educational growth through self-awareness, teamwork and risk taking. We provide a non-profit outdoor service with trips and rentals for all those in our community.


 

Student Health Services

Student Health Services provides health care within a holistic framework to assist students in attaining a level of wellness that will support successful academic and life experiences.


 

Testing Center

To facilitate proctored testing in support of instruction, enrollment, disability accommodations, and the higher education needs of the community.
