The following are essential components of the
course syllabus. Instructors should include items A through G.
Additional course information may be included.
- General Information
Include the college name, division, course name,
number, section and current semester data at the top of the
page.
- Instructor Information
Include your name, office location, telephone
number and office hours.
- Course Information
Credit
Include the full credit hours for this course and the
following breakdown of credits, by category, when appropriate:
number of lecture hours and number of lab hours.
Course Type
State whether course is lecture based, laboratory based,
small group/collaborative, activity based, individual
instruction, practicum, or other (describe).

Co-requisites
List by course number and title.
Textbooks
Include both required and supplementary textbooks. Break
this into two categories, if appropriate. For each text, include
full title, edition, author(s) or editor(s), publishing company
and copyright date. Indicate "None" or "TBA"
when textbooks are not currently known.
Supplies
Indicate special supplies required of the student for this
course. If none, so state.
Caveats
Include any special restrictions and/or requirements
that the student should be aware of before starting the course
(i.e., those which are not typically associated with academic
coursework, e.g., strenuous exercise, need for a car, job
requirements, etc.)
Course Description
In succinct phrases, identify the major topics,
concepts and/or goals. Include the audience for whom the course
is intended and the depth of intensity in which the material
will be covered. The description must be consistent with the
current college catalog copy and with the content outline.
Course Outcomes
The major outcomes of the course should be stated
using behavioral language that tells what the student is to know
or do by the end of the course. Outcomes statements should
reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities the student is
expected to acquire. As a general rule, there are usually three
to six major outcomes for a course, so the statements need to be
more comprehensive than traditional course objectives were.
Assessment of Course
Outcomes
State how the student will demonstrate the
achievement of the knowledge, skills or abilities identified in
the course outcomes.
General Education
Abilities
Provide information on which General Education
abilities this course emphasizes. A course has a significant
focus on an ability if at least 25% of the course content and/or
activities center around the development of that ability.
- Course Requirements
Include projects, tests and assignments that
need to be completed before the last course day. Additional
items such as remedial work, unscheduled labs, scheduled study
sessions, etc., may be included.
- Evaluation and Grading Scale
The course syllabus should be consistent with
the course outline in requiring at least the minimum evaluation
requirements stated on the course outline. Include expectations,
course requirements, attendance, and all components that will be
included in the final determination of the grade.
- Disability Statement
A uniform statement must be included in the
syllabus as follows:
In compliance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973, NIC provides services and accommodations to
students who experience barriers in the educational setting due
to learning, emotional, physical, mobility, visual or hearing
disabilities. For more information please contact the Disability
Support Services Office in the College Skills Center, Lee/Kildow
Hall 118, or phone 769-7794.
