Strategic Plan Draft for Public Review

The first draft of the Strategic Plan was completed by the Steering Committee on May 5 and is now ready for public review. NIC invites you to review the plan and provide comment via email at strategicplan@nic.edu or at our Open Forum on May 14. The Open Forum will be held in the Lake Coeur d’Alene room of the Student Union from 5:00-7:00pm.

Overview

The NIC Strategic Planning process began in November 2007 and concludes in May with the NIC Board of Trustees reviewing a first reading of the plan. The total process has several phases, outlined below. Ultimately, the Strategic Planning process will result in a 5-year plan that will help guide NIC’s development in several critical areas.

Phase 1 began with collecting three kinds of data:  Image & Perceptions, Peer Comparison, and Demographic Data for the College and region.

The Image & Perception data utilized telephone surveys as well as internal and external focus groups. This was the first opportunity for community input into the process.

In Phase 2, the data was compiled for review by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee (SPC) and Stakeholder groups.

These data were examined in Phase 3 by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. The committee consists of 10 NIC members & 10 community members. The committee evaluated the data as well as NIC’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT). Finally, the committee developed a set of preliminary goals to be reviewed by Stakeholder groups.

Phase 4 consisted of the Stakeholder groups meeting to review the data, participate in a mini-SWOT analysis, and give comment on the preliminary goal analysis. All of this was based on the data compiled in Phase 2 and the preliminary work done by the SPC in Phase 3.

Finally, in Phase 5, the information collected from the process was reviewed again by the Steering Committee and President’s Cabinet. PC drafted a plan with a final set of goals and action plans. This draft will be open for public comment before being sent to the BOT.

The goal is to develop a 5-year plan with action items and measurable outcomes. The plan will be updated each year along with the development of new yearly action plans.
