Testing Center
Placement Exams
COMPASS is the computerized reading, writing and math placement exam at NIC. No previous computer experience is necessary. There is a calculator built into the math program for you to use. NIC’s policy is to allow use of the on-screen calculator only.
- Appointments are made for group tests and as needed on an individual basis. Walk in times are available during the Testing Center’s regular hours, but first priority will be given to students with appointments.
- You will need to record your Student ID Number on the test. (not your Social Security Number). If you don’t know your ID #, center staff can assist you.
- There is no time limit for the COMPASS test. You may take as much time as you need; it will not affect your scores in any way. If you do not finish in one sitting, the test session can be suspended and you can return to finish within 30 days. One & 1/2 hours is the average testing time, but individual times vary widely.
- It is your responsibility to know which part of the COMPASS test you need to take if you are not taking the entire test. Talking with an advisor is the best way to determine what your needs are.
- The math test has two starting levels:
- Pre-Algebra start
- Algebra Start
- You will not be told which answers are correct or incorrect. When taking the math test, the difficulty of the questions progresses automatically based on the accuracy of your responses, i.e.: correct responses will result in more difficult problems.
- You will receive a score for each section of the test immediately after taking it.
- A Photo ID must be presented before testing!
- Sample tests can be found at www.act.org/compass and study items can be found at www.aaamath.com, www.purplemath.com and www.grammarbook.com
- If any portion of the test needs to be retaken, an authorization form from Advising Services in the SUB is required along with a $10 fee.
