FLC Myths versus Reality
Myth: “I don’t need a book for FLC courses.”
Reality: Students need books for FLC courses. The exception to this rule is as follows:
A student already has keyboarding skills and can pass a timed test to fulfill the requirements of the course(s).
Check the course syllabus for textbook information. Take a copy of your schedule to NIC's bookstore (The Mica Peak Exchange located in the Edminster Student Union Building) for assistance locating and purchasing your textbooks at the bookstore.
Myth: “All I have to do to pass an FLC class is to take a test.”
Reality: Each Flexible Learning Center course has unique requirements. Keyboarding 1 and Keyboarding 2 are the only courses that you can pass by successfully passing one test. All of the other courses require successful completion of a combination of submitted assignments and tests. Make certain that you read each course syllabus and the course requirements in the Blackboard site to see what coursework is required for an individual course. Students need to plan to spend as much time on FLC courses as any other college class. The standard is three hours per week per credit for 15 weeks. In other words, each credit averages about 45 hours of work over the semester.
Myth: All FLC courses are the same so once I take one course, I can assume that I know everything I need to know about all other FLC courses.
Reality: It is important that students realize that each FLC course is developed based on specific curriculum. Just as all math courses are not the same, not ALL FLC courses are the same. They need to read the information provided on their MyNIC Courses site regarding each course in order to be successful.
Myth: Students can register for classes in the FLC anytime during the semester.
Reality: Students can register for FLC classes through the 10th week of each semester.
Myth: The FLC is open when other NIC classes are not in session.
Reality: The FLC is a classroom with courses taught by FLC faculty. Therefore, we follow the NIC college calendar and are closed when NIC classes are not in session and during finals week.
