Purpose:

To provide financial assistance for employment skills upgrades to Alaska Natives who are original enrollees to the Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) and their lineal descendants.

Eligibility:

This program is open to Alaska Native enrollees to CIRI under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act should have a high school diploma or GED, have a GPA or 2.5 or higher, be preparing to enter or reenter or upgrade in the job market upon completion of training, and be able to demonstrate the availability of employment. They must be accepted or enrolled part time in a course of study that directly contributes toward potential employment or employment upgrade. Alaska residency is not required. Along with their application, they must submit a 500-word statement on their educational and career goal and how they are contributing, or planning to contribute, to a positive Alaska Native community. Selection is based on the statement, academic achievement, rigor of course work or degree program, student financial contribution, financial need, grade level, previous work performance, community service, and relationship of degree program to career goals.

Financial Data:

The maximum stipend is $4500 per calendar year.

Duration:

1 quarter; recipients may reapply.

Additional Information:

Only part-time study is supported. Total course credits may not exceed 11 credit hours per application.

Varies each year; recently, 70 of these grants were awarded.

Deadline:

March, June, September, or November of each year.
