To provide financial assistance to Native American and other underrepresented minority undergraduate and graduate students interested in working on a degree in the geoscience.


This program is open to members of ethnic minority groups underrepresented in the geosciences


      • Blacks
      • Hispanics
      • American Indians
      • Eskimo
      • Hawaiians
      • Samoans
U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required.


Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in an accredited institution working on an undergraduate or graduate degree in the geosciences, including geology


        • geochemistry
        • geophysics
        • hydrology
        • meteorology
        • physical oceanography
        • planetary geology
        • or earth science education
        • students in other natural sciences, mathmathics, or engineering are not eligilbile


Selection is based on a 250-word essay on


        • career goals and why the applicant has chosen a geoscience as a major
        • work experience
        • recommendations
        • honors and awards
        • extracurricular activities
        • financial need


Financial data 

Stipends range from $500 to $3,000 per year.


1 academic year; renewable if the recipient maintains satisfactory performance.

Funding for this program is provided by ExxonMobil Corporation, ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco Corporation, Marathon Corporation, and the Seismological Society of America.

Varies each year; recently, 25 of these scholarships were awarded.
