Purpose

To provide financial assistance for undergraduate or graduate studies to persons of Hawaiian descent.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 50% or more of Hawaiian descent (descendants of the aboriginal inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778) or a homestead lessee (at least 25% Hawaiian ancestry).

They must be

    •  U.S. citizens
    • enrolled in full-time study in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
    • and able to demonstrate financial need and academic excellence
    • Undergraduates must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher
    • Graduate students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

 

Current Hawaiian residency is not required. Special consideration is given to applicants with exceptional academic merit and proven commitment to serving the Native Hawaiian community.

Along with their application, they must submit

    • a short statement indicating their reasons for attending college
    • their planned course of study
    • and their career goals.

 

Selections is based on

    • academic achievement
    • good moral character
    • and financial need.

 

Financial data

The amounts of the awards depend on the availability of funds and the need of the recipient; recently, stipends averaged $2,014.
