To provide financial assistance for undergraduate study to Alaska Natives and their lineal descendants.


This program is open to Alaska Natives who are original enrollees or lineal descendants of a regional or village corporation under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971 or a member of a tribal organization or other Native Organization. The corporation or other Native organization with which the applicant is affiliated must be a current member of Alaska Village Initiatives, Inc. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and must be able to demonstrate financial need. They  must be accepted or enrolled full time in a 4-year undergraduate program. Preference is given to juniors and seniors.

Along with their application, they must submit a 500-word statement on

  • their educational and career goals
  • how they are contributing, or planning to contribute, to a positive Alaska Native community

Financial data

The stipend is $2,500 per year.

Funds are to be used for

  • tuition
  • university fees
  • books
  • course required supplies
  • and (for students who must live away from their permanent home in order to attend college) room and board

Checks are made payable to the student and the university and are sent directly to the student's university.

This program, established in 1986, is funded by Alaska Village Initiatives, Inc. The CIRI Foundation assumed its administration in 1999.
