To provide financial assistance to Native American and  other underrepresented minority students entering college and planning to major in meteorology or an aspect of atmospheric sciences.

This program is open to members of minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences (especially Hispanics, Native Americans, and Blacks/African Americans) who are entering their freshman year at a college or university and planning to work on a degree in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.

Applicants must submit

      • an official high school transcript showing grades from the past 3 years
      • a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or guidance counselor
      • a copy of scores from an SAT or similar national entrance exam
      • and a 500-word essay on a topic that changes annually

Recently, applicants were invited to write on global change and how they would use their college education in atmospheric science (or a closely-related field) to make their community a better place in which to live.

Selection is based on the essay and academic performance in high school.
