Purpose - To provide financial assistance to high school seniors who are citizens of the Cherokee Nation, are planning to attend college in any state, and are interested in submitting essays on Major Ridge.

Eligibility - This program is open to citizens of the Cherokee Nation who are graduating from high schools within or outside the jurisdictional area of the tribe. Applicants must be planning to enroll at a college, university, or vocational/technical school in any state. Along with their application, they must submit an essay on Major Ridge, a major figure in Cherokee history. Selection is based on GPA, ACT score, cultural and community activities, personal academic goals, commitment to work with Cherokee people in the future, and financial need.

Financial data - The stipend is $1,000 per semester ($2,000 per year).

Duration - 1 year. Renewal  for the second semester requires the recipient to earn a GPA of 2.5 or higher in the first semester.

Number awarded - 1 each year.

Deadline - March of each year.
