Math and English Placement Assessment

Placement at NIC

All first-time freshman students must provide placement information to be admitted to North Idaho College.  Only admitted students can register for classes. Placement is based on:

  • ACT, SAT, or COMPASS scores within the last two years and/or 
  • NIC English and ALEKS math assessment.

  • Not sure or want to potentially raise your placement?

    Take the NIC English and ALEKS math assessment  

    NIC will use the highest placement information from the ACT, SAT, COMPASS, or NIC Placements to help you register.  

North Idaho College Math Placement:

What you need to know:

  • This ALEKS assessment is only good for NIC placement. You can take the ALEKS assessment at NIC's Main Campus or at any NIC Outreach Center. If you want to take it at another college or an offsite location, please visit the ALEKS Distance Proctor page.
  • The ALEKS assessment must be taken at an officially approved testing center.
  • You will be provided with a pencil and paper. There is an on-screen calculator available for you to use.
  • ALEKS allows up to three hours to complete the assessment, but generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete.

  • This is a free, un-proctored placement that can be taken anywhere, at any time on the Internet.  
  • Expect to spend between 15 and 30 minutes on this placement assessment
