Staff Assembly Meeting Minutes

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 12:03 p.m. by Alex Harris, Vice Chair.

Approval of Minutes
It was moved and seconded to approve the December 10, 2009 meeting minutes.

Featured Topic:
Jon Totten, Outdoor Pursuits Program Coordinator, gave some tips on How to Beat the Winter Blahs.
• Get some exercise
• Take time off during the day to catch some sunlight
• Take a vacation and go where the sun is

He also talked about the variety of services available through Outdoor Pursuits. They offer clinics such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and avalanche awareness training. They have trail maps and can direct you to trail heads. He also brought along a couple of rental items, i.e. snowboard and snowshoes that can be rented by anyone; student, staff, faculty or community.

Jon also said the faculty/staff rafting trip has been scheduled on the Lower Salmon River July 29 – August 1, 2010. Contact Outdoor Pursuits if you are interested in this fun trip.

NEW BUSINESS:
Seiter Hall/Village Information

Garry Stark gave an update on the Seiter Hall/Village project. The cost for the portable village is about $200,000.

Wellness

Chantel Black is the chair of the Wellness Committee. She reported that the committee is scheduling some nutrition and training activities in February, the wellness walks are on Tuesday/Wednesday at noon. Chantel said they are planning to have a master gardener speak on April 22. More information to follow.

The NIC Wellness Committee presented the Net Zero Challenge, encouraging NIC employees to try to not gain any weight, or better yet, lose weight over the winter holidays when the average American gains five pounds. To participate, weigh in Nov. 16-20 in the Human Resources Office in Sherman Administration Building. Weighout will be Jan. 4-8. Participants who maintain their weight or lose weight during this time period will receive one movie ticket and be entered into a drawing for one of three $25 Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce gift certificates.

Staff Achievement Award

Alex Harris reported that the Staff Executive Committee has been working on redefining the Staff Achievement Awards to better recognize staff members who have made a valuable and much appreciated impact here at NIC. There will be four different awards Rising Star Award, Staff Excellence Award and Outstanding Service to the College Community as well as the Staff Excellence Award for Part-Time Employee.

Proposed Staff Sabbatical

Alex Harris a committee needs to start working on a proposed Staff Sabbatical policy. Anyone interested in working on the proposed policy should call Nancy Edwards ext.3215
