Begin the Career Development Process
Ah, summertime. What are you going to do for three months?
This much-anticipated break offers an excellent opportunity to relax, travel, eat when you want, do good, sharpen your online gaming skills, earn money, sleep until afternoon—the kind of things you daydream about during the school year. It's your chance to do what YOU want to do with your life until the next term rolls around.
Of course, some summer endeavors are more rewarding than others. Here is a look at how some summer activities can help further your career development.
You may have already lined up a job for the summer. The best kind of summer job will teach you or let you practice useful skills and introduce you to potential mentors and references.
It's great if you have the opportunity to work in a field that you're interested in—for example, studying fish biology at a hatchery, teaching young children while working as a nanny, or learning about drafting or architecture while doing construction work. It is very important to begin your summer job search early. Year-round, think about what you'd like to do, then in late winter use your contacts and the Internet to search out opportunities to get paid while you do what you enjoy.
