Molstead Library's interlibrary loan (ILL) service is available to current NIC students, faculty, and staff, as well as emeritus faculty, NIC Board of Trustees members and NIC Foundation Board of Directors members. We will attempt to borrow materials requested by the above patron groups from any OCLC member library in the United States or abroad with the following exceptions:

  • audio-visual materials (exceptions are made for NIC faculty only)
  • material that the library already owns
  • reference materials
  • special collections materials
  • copies of articles available in one of the library's online subscription full-text periodical indexes or in serials to which the library subscribes.

NIC students are limited to 20 ILLs per semester, though the Circulation Supervisor may waive this limit when circumstances warrant. Any patron may be referred to a local public library if the library holds the requested item(s), as this may be preferable to waiting for the item to arrive via ILL.

No charges or fees are assessed NIC students. NIC will pay up to $10 for materials for current NIC faculty and staff.

Online forms for requesting books and articles are available via the links at the top of this page. ILL requests are processed daily by the Circulation Supervisor, who will notify patrons when their items have arrived.

All interlibrary loans are subject to the same restrictions placed on in-house materials, such as due dates, overdue fees, and replacement costs if lost or damaged. ILL items may only be renewed through the Circulation Supervisor, who will attempt to obtain permission to renew from the lending library.

Molstead Library, with rare exception, provides no interlibrary loan services to community borrowers. Community borrowers are encourage to avail themselves of their local public or school libraries' ILL services.

Molstead Library adheres to interlibrary loan policies and guidelines as set forth in the American Library Association's Interlibrary Loan Practices Handbook, 3rd ed., 2011. To better comply with federal copyright law, Molstead Library is a member of Copyright Clearance Center, Inc.

Procedures:

The Circulation Supervisor will process all interlibrary loans and contact patrons who have placed a request when the material has arrived. The material will be available for pick up at the Check-Out Desk.

The Circulation Supervisor is responsible for seeing that all interlibrary loans are received, processed, circulated and returned in a timely manner.
