Welcome to the TRIO Mentor Program

  • What is the TRIO Mentor program?

The TRIO Mentors Program is a unique and valuable service available to TRIO students only. "Peer mentoring" helps students maximize their educational experience by learning from the collective experience of students who have gone before them. Research identifies peer mentoring as a best practice resulting in increased success, GPA, graduation rates, and overall satisfaction when students are connected with a more experienced student as a guide.

  • What is the mission of the TRIO Mentor program?

The mission of the TRIO Mentors program is to empower self-efficacy and student success among first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities.

  • What are TRIO Mentees?

TRIO students who are selected to receive mentoring services join a privileged group of TRIO Students known as TRIO Mentees. TRIO Mentees enjoy greater student satisfaction (see list of benefits below). TRIO Mentees become the mentors and leaders of tomorrow!

  • How do I become a TRIO Mentees

Students are selected by their TRIO Advisor (or self-referred) to receive mentoring services. After completing an orientation and filling out a schedule, you will be paired with a TRIO Mentor. Click on the link below, or ask your advisor for details.

  •  What are TRIO Mentors?

A mentor is an experienced trusted peer that engages, walks-alongside, supports, and encourages TRIO Mentees to  become the successful student they desire to be (see list of services below). TRIO Mentors are selected based on their experience, success, and growth as a student, as well as their passion to pass that knowledge onto other students. They are TRIO leaders and they make a difference in the lives of those they serve.

Meet ABBEY- a TRIO Mentor

Hello, my name is Abbey. I am a 21-year-old first-generation TRIO student. Education has always been a large part of my life. I have been a part of TRIO since the fall of 2018 and I cannot thank them enough for their endless support. That’s why when the opportunity to be a TRIO Mentor opened up, I couldn’t pass it up. My hope as a TRIO Mentor is that I can form new friendships, while helping other students like me to reach their goals. I enjoy learning about microbiology, human anatomy & physiology, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, and other courses. I was dual enrolled throughout high school. This is my third year of being a full-time college student. I earned my Associates degree the spring of 2020. In addition, I was accepted into NIC’s first Dental Hygiene program, and I will become a certified dental hygienist by the winter of 2022. Currently I spend most of my time doing school work because the dental hygiene program has a vigorous work load. However, outside of school I enjoy going to the gym, being in the outdoors with my pup, spending time with family and friends, and most of all riding my dirt bike!

I am thrilled to work with such a great organization like TRIO, and all the lovely people that come along with it. As a TRIO Mentor, I hope to be able to spread my motivation and positive attitude toward others. I can’t wait to meet so many new faces and help others to achieve their goals!

If you see me in the hallways of TRIO, please feel free to stop me so we can chat!

Meet Angel Beier- a TRIO Mentor

Hi, my name is Angel Beier! I have been attending NIC since Fall 2019 as a full time student and have earned my associates in General Studies. I recently changed career goals from becoming a physician to a nurse practitioner, so I am currently working to earn a bachelors in nursing. I enjoy studying and exploring science, physical and mental health, and outdoor recreation. In my free time, I am often outdoors backpacking, rock climbing, and snowboarding on a resort or in the backcountry. I have been a TRIO student since Fall 2020, and it has proven to benefit me so much since! As a TRIO mentor, I hope to help everyone I work with find the same benefits this program and college offered me. I am eager to get to know other TRIO members and offer whatever services I can to you all!
