North Idaho College Athletics Director Bobby Lee announced Thursday that following a national search, Shay Fuson is the Cardinals’ new, full-time head women’s softball coach.

“NIC softball has great tradition and a history of success,” Lee said. “Shay has a strong passion for NIC softball, and I am excited to work with her.”

Fuson played softball at NIC under Don Don Williams from 2006 to 2008 and led the team in 2007 to a first-place NJCAA Region 18 Championship and a second-place NJCAA National Championship. Fuson was an All-American in 2008 and still holds several records at NIC.

She continued her softball career at Adelphi University and was voted 2011 team MVP, holding a team-high batting average while also leading her team in RBIs and total bases. Her team made it to the North East-10 Conference Championship Playoffs in 2011. Fuson graduated from Adelphi University with honors in 2011 and was an NE-10 Second Team All-Conference nominee the same year.

For the past two years, Fuson was interim head softball coach at NIC, and for six years prior she was an assistant for Don Don Williams.

“The process that led us to select Shay was very competitive, and I’m very grateful to the search committee,” Lee said. “Now, I’m excited to watch Shay lead the softball team and make her impact with the program.”
